I like the green ones better because they make a different sound. The red ones screech constantly. The green ones sort of take turns. So you hear one tree start up and then grow silent as another tree full starts up. It is a more pleasant sound. |

So then you must collect them and salt them. Then you store these in jars to eat. Of course I wouldn't care for them at all, but if there were no other food available I would. |

I it is different spawnings of them. Sometimes we get the red ones but more often we get the green ones. The red ones are smaller but are louder and shriller. I remember at least three swarms of them during my 35 years. The green ones seem like they appear every few years. |

Sometimes we are in drought and the ground here contains a lot of clay. It can be very hard. They always manage to get out and only then do they harden. When they first emerge they are very fragile. |

They sort of remind me of my childhood though, because I'd hear them a lot as a child. Just playing in the yard, going to get a snowcone, or something. It reminds me of summer vacation I guess. |

I do a lot of camping and work outside in the summer and they were really loud. Almost cannot sleep. I think the area they were concentrated the most was Maryland. I imagine there are several 17 year cycles with different groups or from various areas. |

You can get it at the pool store or any big box store like Sams or Costco in the pool chemical section. It is inexpensive and can be put in a spreader. I mix it with lime which also keeps the bugs and snakes down (I live in a rural area so lots of snakes). Quoting: Watching the world Diatomaceous earth dehydrates their bodies and they eventually die. This attitude is why we are in such dire straights as a society. It's a natural cycle and important to the ecosystem. |
