An Overlooked City - North Korea's safe haven?
First, I would just like to say hello to my fellow GLP'ers! I've been lurking for a long time (well over two years now) and have decided to sign up to share some information with all of you. I have been speaking with a former roommate from college and exchange student from South Korea about the escalating tensions between the United States and North Korea. My former roommate now lives in Fusong, China and the former exchange student moved back to South Korea and makes his home in Goseong.

Both, on separate occasions have mentioned reports and rumors of a lot of traffic (business and military) in Wonsan, North Korea recently. Based on what they have told me, they are under the impression that North Korea is converting a lot of chemical factories in the area into nuclear "think tanks." On the surface, these claims make sense given the existence of respected universities, a civilian/military air base and already functioning chemical plants all located in Wonsan.

History tells us that Wonsan suffered some serious damage during the Korean War. Today, the city (based on pictures and reports from friends close to the region) seems to be rebuilt, revamped and is being touted as a "Socialist Paradise" by North Korean leaders. So GLP, I ask if any of you have heard similar reports or could share any further information about Wonsan?

It seems like recent activities all point to Wonsan being a vital piece in North Korea's military plans, as well as serving as a propaganda machine for Kim Jong-un.
