Re: Fasting once a week : Who's with me?
Just a heads up, if you people are doing this to lose weight, fasting is the absolute worst way to do it I think.

From what I understand, when you fast your body goes "Oh shit! I'm fasting. Food must be scarce. I don't know when I'll get food next so I need to store as much of the calories I take in as fat. Need to stock up!"

So if you do it seldom and don't deprive yourself to the point where you start wasting away, it might have the opposite effect and actually cause your body to build fat instead of shed it.

That's my understanding anyway, no first hand/second hand experiences though.

I think some people do instead of doing colon cleanses. Drink a lot of water and no food for a bit does clean you out pretty good.

I fasted from 210 down to 170. Got into weights and bulked up to 190. Same waist size as 170. That was three years ago still at 185-190.

How goes it?

Sunday might be a better day, less pressures for most people.

Try to sleep most of it away.

Studies say...

That actually isn't true.

Now, it isn't that you;ve been lied to, but that until recently, no one has bothered to really check out what happens during a fast at all. We still need a lot more information, but of the things we know to be (pretty) certain we have the following right now.

1. For the first 60-90 hours of a fast, your metabolism speeds up.

Not a lot, about 2-7%, but it certainly isn't what we've all been told at all. (Which is that if you ever miss a meal, you're foolish body instantly shuts down and tries to tuck away every calorie it can get.)

2. While you do lose muscle on a fast, it isn't nearly as much as was once thought.

*Provided you have a decent fat base. Your body will use very little protein until the fat is gone. Then watch out.

3. Fasting for long periods, that being from seven to 40 days, taking in nothing but water, is actually good against many common chronic conditions. Inflammation for instance, which is at the heart of most age related chronic conditions. Also, some studies show that it's helpful against Asthma (Inflammation again.) heart disease and cancer. Some people believe that your body will actually digest cancer cells during prolonged fasts, to protect more needed flesh.

4. On very long fasts your body will go into a very slow metabolic state. Down by about 7% over where you started from.

For four to six weeks.

Apparently we're built to run at a normal rate and just eating for a while doesn't "damage" out bodies long term at all. We're built to survive that very well it seems!

The people that gain all the weigh back "and more" generally do it within the first six weeks. If you want to keep that weight off, you have to eat a moderate diet after you begin eating again and hold to that until you're metabolic rate is back to normal. Exercise helps to jump start it.

Now, there needs to be more studies done, of course. No one does them, because it's hard to monetize not eating as a way of life. :)

So far though, the information seems to be telling us that it's alright to skip some meals!

It won't hurt you in the short run (under three days) and might have a lot of hidden benefits.

*Bonus fact: It also seems to protect the brain against dementia. Especially 1-3 day fasts.

The big problem for me is going for more than a day without food. I'm trying to condition myself to go for two or even three days at a time, fairly regularly. (About sixty hours or so, because there is no metabolic slow down during that phase.)

I've seen it said a thousand and twelve times in my recent research that after three days or so, hunger goes away and even the desire to eat will, until the fat is gone.

I haven't experienced that myself however.

Re: Fasting once a week : Who's with me?
Going to start fasting once a week again. Thought it would be interesting to do with a group to hold each other accountable. Post updates about weight loss and or other experiences while on the fast. Body sensations, sense of smell etc.

I've fasted a few years ago : See my thread... Thread: Lose Weight By Fasting Once a Week ... for anyone who is interested in my system. I attempted to make the fasting process as easy as possible.

I usually do it Mondays. Don't know why that's just been a good date/time for me.

Whats your reason for wanting to do it? Detox? Weight loss? Spiritual experience?
Some day we will know why everything is happening the way it is.. only let love in and it will set you free.

Re: Fasting once a week : Who's with me?
I fast nearly every day.

Never eat breakfast, and the earliest I eat is around 1pm.

Some days I go till 4 or 5pm without eating since the same time the prior day. That makes for a 24 hour fast... which I do very often.

Prayer and fasting. This world needs a lot of people doing this! 10pm Sunday to 10pm Monday? Is that correct?

Re: Fasting once a week : Who's with me?
Who's with you?

VERY, VERY DEW.

Hardly anyone can afford to.

With 46,000,000 Americans on food stamps, most people have to fast at least 2 or 3 times a week because they haven't any money.

Fasting JUST ONCE A WEEK is a luxury VERY, VERY FEW in the USA can afford.

Goodness, you don't really believe what you posted, do you? With EBT, free breakfasts and lunches for those who qualify in most schools, I sincerely doubt that anyone is involuntarily fasting several times a week. Now maybe they are selling their EBT cards for money for drugs or other things, but that is not involuntary fasting.

(6) His disciples questioned him and said to him, "Do you want us to fast? How shall we pray? Shall we give alms? What diet shall we observe?"
Jesus said, "Do not tell lies, and do not do what you hate, for all things are plain in the sight of heaven. For nothing hidden will not become manifest, and nothing covered will remain without being uncovered."

(14) Jesus said to them, "If you fast, you will give rise to sin for yourselves; and if you pray, you will be condemned; and if you give alms, you will do harm to your spirits. When you go into any land and walk about in the districts, if they receive you, eat what they will set before you, and heal the sick among them. For what goes into your mouth will not defile you, but that which issues from your mouth - it is that which will defile you."

That said, eat right all the time so you have no need to fast.

But, to each their own I suppose.

Good luck OP. My work is very strenuous physically, and fasting while on the job is not an option for me. Have tried it, not good.
But weekends are a different matter.
I wish you the best of luck.
Fasting is a spiritual practice for Coptic Christians, who fast for over 200 days each year.
other religions of course, follow fasting schedules too.
Again, I hope you reach both of your goals.

Yes usually. But Ido not work Monday or Sunday. Wouldn't recommend it if you have stresses like job on those days.

I'm eating less and have been slowly losing weight. At 5'7" and 63 yr old, I weighed in at 153 lb this morning. The lightest I've been in a couple of decades.
