SAME place it hit a few years ago... Edit by Dr. Acula - See post tornado live coverage of damage and destruction at the link below: [link to kfor.com] I have no link. This is breaking news. As per the Weather Channel, Weather Center Live, at least a 'Mile and a Half Wide' field of damage. Confirmed by Weather Channel. A two miles wide tornado, F4, you got to be joking. That is totally impossible. That's what they keep saying. What was once thought to be impossible has changed in an afternoon... Crazy, huh? In a way I hope this is HAARP. I don't want to believe mother nature is capable of something like this on her own... Everyone needs to stop exaggreting. There have been far larger areas of more devastation from tornadoes, including in the recent 10 years. This is not the worst damage Ive seen as far as damage intensity x width Joplin was worse |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 40172567 United States 05/20/2013 05:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Let's say you went out into your yard and dug a round hole deep enough to get your body into. You had a piece of board or plywood marked with orange or highly visible coloring with words stating you were in there. The board has a handle so that once you are in the hole, you can hold on and hold the board over the hole, pulling downwards against the suction. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11701758 Would this be a good idea? I mean say you are poor and can't really afford a shelter. You are not safe inside your home and need to be underground. I guess a spider hole would be the best idea. Anyone with a shovel should be able to at least dig down and dig a hole. You need to be highly aware of where you will dig to avoid digging into water or underground power lines. You would probably have to at least dig down four or five feet, enough to crouch. It might not even be "Legal" to do this, but heck with that. You need to dig an L shape. The vertical shaft should be 5 foot deep and only wide enough for one person to go down at a time. The horizontal shaft should be a good 5 to 6 long. The entrance hole to the horizontal shaft should be only large enough for one person to enter the H-shaft at once. The H-shaft itself should be dug deep downward and on an angle. The entrance hole will need to be about 2 feet diameter, so in actuality there will be at least 3 feet of dirt above your head, with more dirt above your head further along the length of the shaft. The shaft should be a good 4 feet in height and wide enough for 2 people to sit abreast comfortably. Long enough to accommodate as many as you can imagine. So, when you and others are sheltering in the horizontal shaft, there is plenty of room, and you can put a small board across the small entrance hole between the V-shaft and the H-shaft. You can bolt 3 strong handles onto the board, tie ropes to them, and everyone sitting in the shaft can hold onto a rope to keep the board in place if suction tries to pull it. Be sure to angle the Horizontal shaft slightly downwards, and dig drainage holes in the bottom of it, just in case heavy rains are present. |

They are searching the debris for kids. This is on live stream. The reporter was crying as he reported it. [link to kfor.com] Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11701758 O dear God. Please please, have mercy. I see the sadness behind the smile. |

Sending up prayers at thismoment for all of OK. and Tx Quoting: Little Miss Sunshine Relax, those schools have good underground shelters, unless they had NO warning they should all be okay, maybe a few minor injuries. Uhhhh - no they don't neccessarily have this.... In this area of the country underground building is cost prohibitive due to water table and foundation issues... Most of what schools have are reinforced safe zones - like areas built with cinder blocks instead of traditional framing... Pics are saying those didn't hold up too well... Yes, no underground shelter at the schools but didn't know about the safe zones. Yes on the safe zones. Speaking of north Texas specifically, code states there has to be an internal space with no higher than 12 ft ceiling and no windows. In large buildings like schools and churches those areas ha e to be reinforced with either steel framing or concrete reinforced material. Square footage is relative to capacity so in a home it could be a large closet or bathroom. In a bigger building it could be several large areas spread throughout the building. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1502149 United States 05/20/2013 05:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Just awful. They decided to keep the kids at the school until after it passed. Prayers for all. :( Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34267563 That surprised me, too. I know here, they used to keep them at the schools until the storms passed, sometimes until 7-8pm. However, after the tornado hit the school in Enterprise, AL, and killed about 5 students, they changed policy and would dismiss about 2 hours prior to the anticipated arrival of the storms. This give the buses time to do their routes and get back and the drivers get home. The thinking was that with kids dispersed in their homes, there would be a lower casualty rate should the town be hit. Also, homes had basements whereas the schools did not. I know a few times they miscalculated the arrival times of the storms and the buses got caught on the road when the storms moved in faster than anticipated. This caused the buses to make emergency stops at various schools, churches, and business - none of which were prepared to deal with a large influx of people - to offload and run for cover. Now, they will just close school for the entire day if tornadoes are expected. It seems silly and overly-cautious until you see scenes like this that are coming out of OK today. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 39789928 This is not the worst damage Ive seen as far as damage intensity x width Joplin was worse ground based reports.... which arent the official report btw... are suggesting that this tornado is worse than the 1999 one that hit this same area in question... until 2011 (Joplin) the 1999 tornado was the worst as in damage worldwide... Citation for above: [link to en.wikipedia.org] so the reporters arent exaggerating too much... Lance West covered the 1999 tornado damage and todays tornado is worse... as per his report... we will all see after the official analysis is completed and presented.... Why do people inhabit islands? Why do people live near active volcanoes? Why do people live near fault lines? Tired of this question!! The planet is a danger zone for crying out loud...natural disasters are everywhere! |
