The really dangerous thing about this problem - SPACE JUNK - in general, is that there is SO much of it up there, that literally all it would take is ONE good solid strike between a couple of good sized objects, and the resulting chain reaction of debris would then take out others, which would only ADD to the debris, and ultimately we would find ourselves planet-locked, so far as there would be no way to launch anything either into orbit or to a distant objective like Mars or the Moon, without the launch vehicle being obliterated by flying thru a nearly impenetrable orbiting shield of space junk. It'd be like being locked in a cage...
