57: Chirinkotan Volcano erupts in Kuril Islands of Far East Russia

Posted on May 24, 2013by The Extinction Protocol

May 24, 2013 – RUSSIA, FAR EAST - The remote volcano in the northern Kuriles is probably in eruption, the latest SVERT report and satellite images suggest. A plume of gas and steam, and possibly some minor amounts ash was seen with the MODIS sensor onboard the NASA Terra satellite this morning. Satellite data also indicate that activity had likely already started in early May, because a small thermal anomaly can be traced back on archive pictures to 7 May. One should take into account that frequent dense cloud cover often prevents such observations, so activity could have started earlier than that. It is not known what kind of activity is occurring at the volcano. Possibilities include some minor explosive (strombolian ?) activity at the summit, or lava flows that might be reaching the sea and produce the steam plume observed. The last eruption of the volcano was (probably) in 2004. –Volcano Discovery [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Re: Chirinkotan Volcano erupts in Kuril Islands of Far East Russia!!!
Chirinkotan volcano is a large, mostly submerged stratovolcano forming a small largely unvegetated and 3 km wide island in the Kuril Island chain. It is located at the far end of an E-W-trending volcanic chain that extends nearly 50 km west of the central part of the main Kuril Islands arc.
The volcano is one of the Kurile's most active. Historical eruptions included lava flows on the SE flank during an eruption in the 1880s and were observed by the English fur trader Captain Snow.
Background:
Chirinkotan rises 3000 m from the sea floor. It has a small 1-km-wide and 300-400 m deep caldera open to the SE. Lava flows from a cone within the breached crater reached the north shore of the island.

1986 eruption
In October and November 1986 Chirinkotan volcano was observed erupting. On 11 October ash emissions reached a height of 800 m above the crater, and drifted 8 km from the volcano. (GVP monthly reports)

1979-80 eruptions
A new eruption started at Chirinkotan volcano in April 1979. In April and May 1979, blocky lava flowed down the SSW flank of the volcano. Ash explosions occurred regularly during the summer of 1979 and increased in October. In January and April 1980, moderate explosions occurred 1-2 times per hour. After April 1980, no reports of further activity are available. [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com]

This is the closest and is currently erupting. [link to farm9.staticflickr.com] Tolbachik Volcano Kamchatka, Russia 55.830 N, 160.330 E summit elevation 3682 m Shield volcano Tolbachik volcano is located in central Kamchatka, 23 km SW of Bezimianny volcano. The volcano is composed of two overlapping cones, Ostry Tolbachik and Plosky Tolbachik. Geologic and historic data show that large fissure eruptions with effusion of several cubic km of basaltic lava occur at the volcano once per century. Tolbachik lava field stretches 40 km SE of Tolbachik volcano and a further 14 km NE of the volcano. 2012-13 Eruption(Current) An explosive eruption began at Tolbachik volcano on 27th November 2012. Ash was reported to a height of 33,000 ft drifting north and northwest of the volcano. The height of ash emission was estimated from seismic records. Ashfall was reported at villages 35 km west of the Tolbachik to a depth of 4 cm. A 4-5 km fissure occurred at Tolbachinsky Dol with Strombolian eruptions at 4-5 vents. A 6-7 km fissure occurred at Plosky Tolbachik with Strombolian eruptions at 2-3 vents. Ashfall, booming noises and rattling windows were reported in nearby towns. During the peak activity at Tolbachik on 28-29 November 2012 eruptive fissures spread over tens of kilometres, and the eruption was heard 60 kilometres away. The eruption was similar to the Great Tolbachik Fissure eruption in 1975-76, but lower in intensity. A fissure 5 kilometres long formed on the southern slope of the Plosky Tolbachik, in the same area as 1975-76 eruptions, but at a higher elevation – about two thousand metres above sea level. Two active centres produced lava flows. A 10 kilometre long lava flow destroyed a monitoring station of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Vodopadny creek, as well as the Leningradskaya station of the institute. A base of the Volcanoes of Kamchatka natural park was destroyed in the same area. Ashfall from Tolbachik volcano was reported 65 kilometres from the volcano up to a depth of 4 cm.

Also there have been 72 quakes and rising in the last 5 days in this area.

Mexico's Popocatépetl volcano, located about 43 miles southeast of Mexico City, erupted again around midday on Thursday, emitting a column of ash which reached some 8,200 feet above the volcano's opening, according to the National Disaster Prevention Center (Cenapred). Ash traveling on winds reached Mexico City, landing on the southeastern district of Milpa Alta. The alert level on the volcano remains on Phase 3 Yellow, indicating "intermediate to high-level explosive activity", the growth of lava domes within the volcano, plumes of gas, steam and ash, and possible pyroclastic flows of "medium range".

Something is going on with the volcano sites. Many of them have not updated since yesterday.
