User ID: 12593074 United States 06/03/2013 08:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It really makes me sad to think that the world has turned to CRAP... in MY lifetime. I remember when my mom would never go shopping without her hat and gloves. Ladies were ladies and men were gentlemen. Don't despair, though. We can each change our own little PERSONAL world, by being and doing what we believe is right and proper. We don't have to "conform" to the BS being shoved down our throats !! I, for one, have never followed "trends". I have always set my own standards, and then TRIED to live up to them as best I can. Can you imagine the CHANGE.... if each one of us refused to conform to this sick society ? If you want change - then BE change. User ID: 28167778 United States 06/03/2013 09:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Everyone has such nostalgia for the past... Anyone remember what was going on in Europe at this time. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 40334276 Also everyone looked the same, go to the financial district all the shirts will be tucked in. Not a lot of character if you ask me... Weren't blacks still at the back of the bus at this point. Wake up people, yes it was a cool place and a cool time, but so is today and it is what you make, just imagine the discussions on GLP at the time, not much different than today, war, coming out of depression, segregation. It is fine to think of the past, but don't idealize things that are not true. It's true that in 1939, black couples were married at the SAME RATES as white couples. The black family disintegrated MUCH later, in the 1960s, due to the emergence of The Great Society under democrat Johnson. In 1939, black AND white families could live comfortably on the one income. The educational gap between blacks and whites in America also did not exist in any way near the form it does today . . blacks have lost so much ground since this was filmed. The glory days of Harlem are long gone, too. For more info, read Thomas Sowell's history of the viability of the black family, a main theme of his that runs through all his works. What struck me was how relaxed everyone looked and how slowly they moved even on the busy streets. No frantic rushing and crowds even in a big city. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 41065342 It was more that most people were polite and had a respectful way of going about their business. They didn't even think twice about it. That's the way they were wired (and brought up). Rude people, people walking around cursing, and so much of the distasteful behavior we see today were just in the very small minority. And when it came to sex, people were private about it. They didn't let the whole world know what they did in their bedrooms. Wonder what they used to sustain their bodies? Surely they would not have the energy to do all that walking. Quoting: Mikiee 40332495 I always find it fascinating to find passages in old books/magazines/etc. where the person "couldn't eat a bite". It seems that people had to almost be coaxed into eating. Appetizers were just that, to STIMULATE the appetite. Women particularly seemed to NOT want to eat when emotionally upset - completely the opposite of the "emotional eating" that women claim today. Also, particularly in the South, people often complained that it was just too hot to eat. Air conditioning was not widespread in the South until the late 1950s. I wonder if that has increased obesity in the South. |

People WANTED to do the right thing the right way. The whole "Do your own thing" mentality of the 1960s got rid of the idea of standards. Most Americans abandoned the idea of high standards and we have what we now have today. |

The ABSOLUTE FREEDOM and ENERGY that WAS America is what provided the inertia that created the economic powerhouse that we no longer are. We were the shining light upon the hill. We now have a police state, reigning over an immoral lazy, wicked nation, where freedom is doled out, and rigidly controlled by evil men. If those men from 1906 could have looked a hundred years into the future, they would have all cut their balls off. |
