NOONE uses the term 'Mentally Retarded" anymore.

I wish there was a good word for stupidity about now.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 32938997

I agree. But since I brought it up you probably mean me.
-but that is what I was trying to say, the term is not used any more and autism is one of the replacement terms for what used to be called mentally retarded.

And what I was trying to say is that someone who is truly intellectually disabled such-as what used to be called, "mentally retarded"--but sometimes is now labeled as Autism,-what I was trying to say is that in those cases, yes, I agree they need the kind of help that society can give-financially and otherwise.

This whole, "spectrum" idea about Autism, is supposed to support having so many differently-able people ALL sharing the same label. But really it makes it easier to handicap people like OP, who are really just a little different that what society considers typical.

And i find it funny how people in this thread got all insulted because people are supposed to get insulted if they hear that term?

Get over yourselves. I as not using the term in any derogatory way, using it to describe that the term is NOT used any more. It just so happens that yes, autism is one of the diagnoses that has replaced "MR".

Re: I have autism! Do you think I am truly disabled? Ask me anything.
I also have Asperger's but tbh it's other folk that look on it as being a hindrance. I am happy and content with my own company but well meaning folk seem to think I should be going out socialising and that I must be lonely. Lol, socialising? Lonely? The first word strikes fear into me and the second, well to me there isn't such a thing as when I am alone I am at my happiest.
I have adapted my life to fit in around things that I just can't do. I am self employed and have turned the businesses into rental businesses so I don't have to go out and instead the rental income is brought to my house each week.
A guy once said to me 'To look at you, you look like a woman of the world but when you talk you seem like a little girl' Probably a perfect description!

It seems like you can work. Can you get a job and make enough to support yourself?
Does your disease make you miss 10 or more days of work a month?

I can't get a job. At least not one that requires interacting with other people. Which is all a job really is. Talking to your boss, talking to coworkers, talking to whoever, etc.

I can't even go to a store and buy something for myself without having a severe anxiety attack.

It's not that I'm talking to somebody either. It's the stimulation.

All of my senses are magnified. Which is why I have a photographic memory.

Lights give me insane migraines. Every sound is louder to me than it would be to someone else. Every taste, every feeling, every emotion is enhanced beyond a point that is bearable.

By the time the guy says, "Do you want a bag?"
I can't even think of what to say because it's just painful being there.

Re: I have autism! Do you think I am truly disabled? Ask me anything.
Hi - good to see someone with autism explaining themselves to the world - not many do that and it leaves a lot of misconceptions, from what I have seen

My son has Aspergers, and some other stuff going on - but he is a sweet kid, laughs a lot, a very black & white thinker, and ultra observant, quick visual learner, and a genius with computers and techy type stuff, like you. I think autistic people are cool because they almost have like superpowers in their own specialty - like they can make the rest of us look dumb when it comes to certain subjects they are uniquely awesome at - they are just born that way. I am hoping my son (soon 18) can find a way to channel that into a successful life in spite of his other challenges, because he sure loves to have things - the techy, costly things that mom cannot give him much of.

Do you have an interest in a field or type of work you hope to get into some day? I am wondering how successful people on the spectrum are at achieving independence and working. He does not want to identify himself as being any kind of different, but he might not have a choice and I think it might work well for him because he has a great personality anyway, like you do.

Thanks for sharing!

hf

Oh, now I see you answered the "work" question. My son would be much more disabled if they didn't put him on a medication that totally changed his functioning with people. He is still shy and has the social skills deficits in some areas, but it really opened up his world so much more. He could do a job around people as long as it required minimal interaction and decision making, as in trying to please a customer and having to decide how to do or not do so, that would confuse him. Things have to be set out in black and white and nothing that is too vague, if you know what I mean. The medicine is called Trileptal - you might want to look into it - it might change a lot of your symptoms and help you function in those ways more, if you did want to get out in the world more. Check with your doctor, of course, but I always try to tell people about this treatment because it is not often heard of but can really help some people with autism or other issues on the spectrum.

Over the years (35) I have worked with hundreds of people who suffer or enjoy the benefits of autism.

You are unlike them all

But as they say

"If you have met one autistic, you have met one "

Everyone is different and you seem to be more different than i am used to.

I am used to children and adults with severe behavioural problems.

I hope to one day be a software engineer! You do have a good idea of what someone with higher functioning autism is actually like, and you're right people get the wrong idea. Somethings I keep trying to stress are that we aren't even close to what a normal person is like because of a essentially rewired brain. Many things that might otherwise be easy for the neurotypical person can be painful, and vice versa. Anything that might seem easy for us could be a hassle to NTPs.

Well, I don't have autism but I have been gluten free for almost 5 years now. I've lost 100 pounds and all of the stomach problems I was having are gone.

There are many more gluten free items now in the grocery store and in restaurants than there was 5 years ago. They're not quite as good as the real thing but they're not bad. You get used to it after awhile.

I quit drinking 18 years ago and don't miss it at all. It's pretty much the same way with bread and pasta for me now.

Re: I have autism! Do you think I am truly disabled? Ask me anything.
I thot it was funny you mentioned how hard it would be to go gluten free due to having to give up pizza - my son with Aspergers (who I told you about earlier in this thread) - that is his ultimate food, like he would eat it 3 times a day if you let him, although now that he's coming up on 18 he is a bit more flexible. I remember going to a support group of families with kids on the spectrum whose children were mostly in grade school, and the dietary limitations were something they found hard to accept in their children. But at least my son likes his with pineapple, so the greasy, chemical filled pepperoni is eliminated, could be worse.

Do you have only certain foods you find appealing, like a short list compared to other people?

The reason I said that is because to someone with autism things like wheat soy and diary products have proteins aren't fully digested. They get in the blood and make their way to the brain where they can react with the brain in a way that causes changes in behaviors.

This is why many would advocate a GFCF diet for someone with autism.

WOW...you people, especially those of you who have autism in your families..stop knocking OP.

There is a saying..."If you have met one Autistic person, then you have met one autistic person"..everyone is different and I cannot believe that you doubt this person.

I have worked with people who have autism for 35 years and I can say with great sincerity that Autism has many levels of abilities and disabilities.

Just because your kids or your neighbors Aunty,s next door neighbour has a autistic family member, doesnt mean the one you have at home is going to be even slightly the same, even if they have they same IQ level.

Autism is basically a information overload challenge...at many different levels.

For a lot of people with autism, walking down the road may not be a problem, but walking into a corner store may be a nightmare...and you can forget about the stupor markets.

Re: I have autism! Do you think I am truly disabled? Ask me anything.
With respect, there's a fundamental misunderstanding here.

Autistic people DON'T "have autism".

Aspie people DON'T "have aspergers".

Some people don't "have left-handedness".

ASD is a state of being. It's who we are. It's not something we have.

Autistic people ARE autistic.

Aspie people ARE aspergers.

Some people ARE left-handed.

It can't be erased, and should not be. Some of the syndrome aspects can be mitigated by some drugs(mostly illegal ones).

Aspergers is "right brained autism"(my definition).

We contribute, or choose not to, as a function of who we are.

We can't be cured - we're not diseased.

We can only conform within certain limits.

Our greatest pain is our inability to connect and be intimate - especially regarding the opposite sex.

We're mostly straight, though many think we're gay. We don't give off the social signals that are expected, and get put into the category of "different". Some equate that to gay, though it's not.

Straight women are often afraid of our differences, though we're generally the gentlest of men - strong and slow to anger. We're generally quite smart too. We can't read your body language any better than you can read ours, and it's sad.

I grieve for the lost opportunities.

Love you all - please be compassionate.

Nostradamus Century 1: Quatrain 50
From the water trinity will be born,
One who will make Thursday as his holiday.
His renown, praise, rule, and power increase,
By land and sea to the East by storm.
