Kevin Rudd supporters petitioning to oust Julia Gillard as PM
KEVIN Rudd's backers are circulating a ballot to oust Julia Gillard as Prime Minister and are confident they have the numbers to forge a new leadership team.

Senior Labor MPs have confirmed they have signed a petition which calls for a spill of the leadership positions with a ballot expected to be held as early as tomorrow morning.

Whoever wins doesn't matter Labor will lose anyway.

Gillard calls spill vote for tonight
Prime Minister Julia Gillard has called a special caucus meeting for 7pm tonight to allow another vote on the leadership against expected contender Kevin Rudd.

She says the loser of the ballot should quit parliament.

Asked if this meant that if she lost she would leave federal politics, Ms Gillard said: "Correct".
