GLP Book Club: Enders Game by Orson Scott Card
Tomorrow afternoon we discuss once I am done with work. I picked this book off my shelf today after not having read it for at least 15 years. I plowed through it and am almost done, but am a little too drunk to discuss it now. I will wait for tomorrow.

Until then feel free to discuss without me.

The number one thing that strikes me is the day to day technology they use. Card was a fucking visionary, the things that don't even exist today, you can see technology leading to.

The other thing that strikes me is the manipulation his siblings use of "the net" (what we would consider forums today). He wrote the book in 1977, how the fuck did he know about the internet?

Anyways, I will get more into this thread tomorrow, headed to bed now. Going to finish the book and work tomorrow, be back after.

God damn the book was practically falling apart. Old, paperback, turning colors and falling apart.

yeah i hope they don't ruin the movie like they did with the golden compass, just because they didn't like the storyline.

idiots don't get that's what make them good in the first place!

Oh? I didn't know they were making a movie and while I was reading it wondered why no one had yet.

You know the movie will be a let down. Anyone who has ever gone to see a movie that they already read the book for is dissapointed.

Jurassic Park, awesome fucking movie when I saw it, then I read the book. Ten times better.

The Hunt for Red October, great movie. Book ten times better. Clancy books have made great movies (with the exception of "The Sum of All Fears"), but they are nothing compared with the books.

Getting back to Enders Game, I remembered some of the ending but not all. I forgot how great the ending was, I am almost intrigued to find and read the sequel, but I get a feeling it won't hold me as much as the original.

He said he drew inspiration from Isaac Asimov.

The rest of the series should be avoided though.

I disagree.

The book where Ender is 1000 years old and on the piggie planet was pretty good.

It's not great like the first by any stretch, but still good.

Kinda like Dune. The first book is amazing, the rest are good.

I've read it about 7 times.

Each time was in one sitting.

It's one of my favorite books of all time!

Yea, if I hadn't put it down to check out things on here and YT I probably would have finished it all yesterday. It is long enough to tell it's story but short enough to make it an easy read to pass the time.

Speaking of Jurasic Park, I think I might read 1 and 2 of that series next. My paperback of the original is quite old, I have read it many times.

Hmmm, like Tom Clancy?

Clancy was writing about the ECHELON program years ago. Also, you can reason that anything in his books is probably at least 5 years out of date.

That is why none of this NSA stuff surprised me, I knew of this ability long before I ever discovered GLP.

I honestly don't read much SciFi, considering how much I love the subject and how many SciFi movies I watch. You know, I have Bradburry's The Martian Chronicles on my bookshelf and don't think I have ever read it a second time. It's short and might provide a good escape tomorrow.

While Ender's Game, and the entire series, are really good, the Ender's Shadow series actually deals with things that are indeed happening now (in regards to the political symbolism)

don't listen to this guy. the first book is great, an easier to handle, but the other 7 books are excellent as well.

the remaining 3 in the first set are about ender's life while out in space/visiting other planets

the other series of 4 is about the remainder of Ender's crew back on Earth after he's left the planet. all of the different characters end up in positions of political power across the different nations of the planet.

great reading...

One of the most important aspects of conspiracy theories is being able to discern when there isn't one.

Looking on his wikipedia page now it says he is co-producing it. There is some hope.

The above poster is probably right though. There is quite a bit of violence in it to come from a child. Even though the basic premise of the book is how these things helped to shape Ender into what he needed to be to win.

One thing it probably won't go a lot into is some of the tactics and strategies he uses. Your average movie audience is to daft to appreciate them and would become bored. It is such an intricate part of the main character though, his ability to quickly ascertain a situation and develop tactics to deal with it.
