The Chinese have been building back doors into the CPU chips that are made there - the US Military got hacked because a bunch of off the shelf hardware they used contained some of these back door'd chips.
There is even speculation that the high tech Global Hawk drone that Iran was able to hijack a year or two ago contained one of these chips.

I work for a major IT Services Provider / Outsourcer, and if you were in the business you would easily recognize it... Hell maybe you've been put out of work by it!

Seriously, my apologies if so, the sad situation of employment in general and IT employment specifically is not now and never has been my idea of ANY way to do business or to treat people, so don't hate on me just because the most recent time my job was on the chopping block, I was offered a job with the axe-swingers... Who actually HAD already a dozen years before put me out of work once before too!

In any event, all of their laptops used for remote access into all the systerms they support are, I believe LENOVO !

I certainly know MINE is, since I'm looking at it over in the corner of the room right now.

And this organization has it's hands into most of the MAJOR Defense Companies whose names you'd ALSO easily recognize...

The details would be easier to dig up if we knew which chip was affected.

Pretty safe to rule out any chips made by Intel for a start.

and the chinese government deliberately inflamed online forums in china with customer service issues related to HP which saw HP loose a dramatic amount of share in the country and ultimatley leading to Lenovo being the number# 1 pc manufacturer in the world.

If it's a network security breach, it's not likely to be the fault of the main processor or CPU. It's probably the network processor, probably part of the chipset on the motherboard these days. Most of those are not from the US any more.

Arizona, Ireland, Haifa,...none in China, AFAIK.

It's too bad. IBM Thinkpads used to be the best business laptops around, before the business was sold to Lenovo.

It would be interesting if someone in the know would deconstruct his Lenovo and the networking components and pre-installed software in particular. I don't think there is anything in the CPU, but networking and pre-installed software is critical for security.

BS, the Chinese put the back doors in intel motherboards which are in much more than just lenovo products
