Be careful not to do your acts of righteousness before men, to be seen like them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets like the hypocrits do in the synagogues and the streets to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

And when you fast [from this world], do not look somber, for the hypocrits disfigure their faces to show men that they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head, wash your face that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
