i'd guess the ones who said this when i was a kid are all long dead by now,religion is an odd human condition indeed. at least with doom wishing there is the actual real possibility of something happening unlike waiting for a dead guy from 2000+ years ago to return and save them. its like the great pumpkin charlie brown.

Pretty bold statement, don't ya think? He said it with AUTHORITY. He never said "might" be preached. Or "could" be preached. Or "should" be preached.
All of the groundwork has been laid for another end times prophecy, known as "The Mark of the Beast". Only in OUR generation has this even become POSSIBLE. Not only possible, but INEVITABLE.
So these previous generations that you mock and make fun of. Well, they obviously didn't know the scriptures, or they certainly didn't understand the scriptures. If they did, then they would have known that it was impossible for Christ to return back then.
But to the foolish OP, I want to thank him for fulfilling yet another end times prophecy:
"Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished. But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved to fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness, but is long-suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
