Preppers live in fear. Why bother? That's no way to live
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 37974159

We all live in fear. Preppers have a feeling of security that help quell the fear. Prepping gives structure and purpose to any life. It makes you aware of the value of the little things.

You are fearful as well...and the first one crying like a girly boy when you have to suck water out of a mud puddle.

Got a hobby? I do.

Re: Prepping & Supplies for SHTF
Sorry no I don't prep and yes I have many hobbies. I just don't live my life prepping and worrying about what might or may never happen, at least not in my lifetime. I just try to live everyday like it may be my last. I don't have time to worry about the what-ifs. What happens if all your prep items make you a target in those times or what if it is all rendered useless? Take life a day at a time. Sure there are things to prep for. But not doomsday....you can't prep for it.

But if you do that, it might BE your last. Never fear. If there's a crop failure, make your way to my house. I have home canned food. Always a chance of botulism, but not likely. Feel like living dangerously? lmao

What facts can you go on for prepping for the end of the world? None, why waste the money and time. Time is more valuable than all those canned foods and bottled water and kits for this and that. Why waste your time? Why not make the most of your time? Yes peepers in the past were prepping for the coming droughts or storms or things of that nature....they knew what to prep for. You don't know what will happen if "doomsday" were upon you. I just think its a waste but that's me, if it comes ill let my instincts guide me. I'm not stupid, I just don't waste valuable time and resources preparing for something that nobody can know anything about or exactly what to do

Prepping so that you can postpone your existence in a post-apocalyptic world aka hell on earth? No matter what this ends the same, just read the Bible, it's all there. If your not right with God, then your prepping in vain. Only Jesus saves.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 45684487

We are told over and over in the Bible to be prepared both physically as well as spiritually.

Genesis 6:21(KJV)
And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.

Genesis 41:1-32
Proverbs 6:6 –11

1 Timothy 5:8(KJV)
But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

Proverbs 27:12(KJV)
A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.
Isaiah 5:20 KJV

I'm too lazy to read all the other replies but three things I'd add
1: fish antibiotics from Ebay (these are the exact same antibiotics Rx'd to people)
2: Vicks vapor rub or generic brand vapor rub (some of this placed into the nostril will cover the scent of dead bodies almost completely)
2: canned beans, some of these will be dated to a shelf life of 2018 even purchased today from your local grocery. The Goya brand tends to have a longer shelf life than any national brand or store brand I have seen. Yes dried beans are cheaper but considering soaking and cooking dried beans canned beans are much better in most situations.

Didn't mean to insult anyone. Just giving you guys different insight or views on it all. Apparently some people can't take that and lash out at others opinions and views and get offended? I never once did any name calling. Maybe a few of you should grow up. You're probably the reason peppers sometimes get a bad name....

Well, some of us have tiny humans called children that we have to look after. A YOLO attitude will not help my children when TSHTF.

The Lord entrusted these children to me, I must be prepared to protect them at all times, whether it's a blizzard that knocks out power, a massive hurricane, martial law or a comet. If you have children, especially little ones like I do, you have to prepare. Otherwise you're kind of a shitty parent.

"The oils in brown rice breaks down rather quickly, causing the rice to go rancid.I had this happen to my brown rice. You can not eat it once its rancid no matter what you do to it.For long term storage only get white rice."

You can store brown rice for many years, by simply using a foodsaver vacuum sealer, and oxygen absorbers.

Even coffee will stay fresh for years, just as long as it is vacuum sealed.

it's the 80/20 rule here on glp.

80% barbarian critters
20% humans

about the same ratio as everywhere else.

wtshtf that 80% will tear each other apart...while the 20% avoids the other 80.

after it all shakes out...maybe 10% survive...

and yes, those that only want peace will inherit earth

Thank you. Here to help. Honestly if it got that bad I would have an escape plan to a relatively remote or safe area and start over. Too many bad people around to stick to civilization. Bring things to start a fire and have a relatively close water source and you should be good to go if you can hunt or gather food. That's if we're brought back to the Stone Age though. Not quite sure how the end of world times would be but that's what I would do. Have a backpack with a few essentials and start moving. Better survival if you move every now and then rather to stick it out in 1 spot

Re: Prepping & Supplies for SHTF
Re: beans being too tough

Rotate your goods. That's just common sense. No food lasts forever without loss of quality. Oxidation or continued dehydration results in toughness or loss of flavor.

Two things to try:
1) basic pH is higher than 7.0 (perfectly neutral water). Yes, right now you could add some baking soda, but in a collapse, that's a supply you cannot replace. You'd add a little wood ash instead (that's where caustic lye comes from for soap). Basic pH results in tenderizing the skins.

2)Germinate the beans. You should be doing this anyway as slight germination (prior to sprouting) results in more enzymes being released and added nutrition. Every little bit helps. Then you might use them for stews but you can also eat them with some meadow herbs as a salad. Believe me, variety is the spice you won't run out of. No one likes eating the same beans and corn or beans and rice every day.

Unless you live in an arid environment, then the humidity should allow you to store beans for three years without a major loss of flavor. Why would you not eat food by then?
...

Re: Baking Powder

The problem is finding a source of tartaric acid (for cream of tartar) so you can make your own baking powder. A lot of things like that are impossible to synthesize. You can make ash cakes like the pioneers made and that's serviceable for flatbreads. This means you have to rely upon three other kinds of breads:

1) Yeast from sour dough
2) Yeast from raisins or persimmons (they work best of all the fruits).

3) Making salt-rising bread from a totally different fermentation. Not to weird you out but it's from the same family as gangrene (Clostridium). Salt-rising is great bread but I doubt you can make it under collapse conditions: you'd need cornmeal, milk, salt, sugar, wheat flour, etc. Only rural folks could make it.
