Asside from the loss of privacy due to the inspections and having your drawers tossed, are most of the rules to insure cleanliness? If so, thank God there are no roaches. The fifteen Blue Hairs are running the asylum.

To all of those bemoaning the OP for her temporary plight I'd like to ask you this:

If you think she's on "welfare" now what do you think she was on all of those years when she pumped thousands of her hard earned dollars into it?
 Quoting: Miggy

Welfare isn't a bad word. It merely contemplates a safety net. Mooching and griping whilst being provided for compassionately is the problem. Either shit in the pot or get off. It can be done...yer just needs a backbone.

But pointing the finger at the other moochers whilst mooching....not good.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 45285432

I see. So that I worked doesn't matter. It's that I'm not working now and drawing on the money I put into the fund.

Re: Living in Subsidized Housing

I agree. This is NOT HUDS ISSUE. This is tenant landlord laws. State.
OP go to Texas statutes and read up on landlord laws.

OP, read your lease, it is your legal guideline as to what you signed on for. If they come in and inspect your home, it should be acknowledged in your lease. If it is not, then it goes against your contract with the apartments.

YOUR LEASE IS A CONTRACT. What is in it is what both the landlord and the tenant MUST abide to.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 46287683

Wow. I really don't think it needs to go that far. This is a tiny little town. We shop together, go to church together, sit in the same city council meetings together, shop at the same nursery for our veggie garden stuff. We all know each other. This isn't some big city company taking advantage of the disabled and elderly, these are our neighbors. blink
 Quoting: Éireann

What do you mean? if you mean you want to do nothing about the "rules" you have to follow, then why even bring it up on here.

Do all of us a favor and READ your lease. If the "rules" are illegal- then do something about it through Texas law. You would be doing the elderly a favor by not letting them get railroaded. But my guess is that all of the "rules" you described are in fact in the lease, at least referred to vaguely, in which case, you signed and MUST comply with.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 46287683

Oh no. I'm going to do something, but I'd rather talk to the board first and with a group. Gracious. I'm hoping this can be resolved without a bunch of legal shit. What if they close the place down because I went straight to the government? That's 15 really great old folks out of a place to live.

I have spoken with the State Attorney's General Office. The Assistant Attorney I spoke with said that because this is a privately owned property, they can make whatever rules they like so long as those rules do not infringe upon my State or Federal Constitutional rights, but that the searches thing was a grey area because since the Housing Authority receives grant money from HUD, they are required to make sure that no one living here is using drugs. Well...we are pretty much walking pharmacies here so I guess they mean illegal drugs chuckle

I only posted this thread to get feed back on what people thought about those rules and if they agreed with me that they were a little hokey and over the top. I certainly didn't mean to get into a war about public assistance. Good grief :(
 Quoting: Éireann

I do not know where you received the bolded info from, BUT IT IS DEAD WRONG. HUD does NOT have a requirement for inspecting a property for drugs or drug users.
You have no case against HUD. You keep mentioning the Housing Authority, are you talking about an actual housing authority or the management company for the apartments you live in?
Let me link you what a HOUSING Authority is.
[link to www.arlingtontx.gov]

It seems that you are referring to a MANAGEMENT COMPANY- not a housing authority.

YOU have shelter.

YOU have food.

YOU also has plenty of ‘time.’

‘Time’ to go to Church.

‘Time’ to sit on committees.

‘Time’ to bitch on GLP.

But ‘NO TIME’ to look for employment, or to set up a small business.

We shouldn’t have to subsidize the lazy.

YOU get the basics, if YOU want more...Earn it!

You want people to feel sorry for you? Feel sorry for these poor souls.

$699 Month?

This doesn't add up.

You say you worked for 30 years?

SSI = Effective January 1, 2013, the Federal benefit rate is $710 for an individual.

So, you are receiving less money on SSDI than someone on SSI?

Something is NOT adding up?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31977378

Yeah... well. We all know that you can get more if you've never worked. We just don't talk about it.
 Quoting: Éireann

$699 (2012) x 1.017 = $710 (2013)

Honey you are on SSI.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31977378

No. My check comes from Social Security Disability. I would only qualify for SSI if I made less that 600 a month. My full disability payment is 804 - 105 for my Medicare Premium.

I don't know how they came up with this figure. The lawyer did all of that crap back in 2003 and I never questioned it. I've learned to live on it. I keep my car insured and inspected, I pay my own utilities (I just have to watch my usage really closely) and I pay for my own food and toilet paper WHICH by the way I pay tax on. I also pay tax when I pay my utility bills, buy gas, get my car insured and inspected, buy a stack of coffee filters or a roll of paper towels.

I hope that all of the people who criticise about those who need public assistance, no matter how small of an amount, end up needing public assistance so they can find out just what a joke it is. If you've ever worked and are on public assistance, you're on the lowest rung of society. Had I never worked a day, I could live like a king. That is sad and it shouldn't be that way. But I don't care to find out all the loopholes and take advantage of a system I paid into to help people who needed it. It works... sort of...and I have food and roof. If the system wasn't in place, I'd be pushing a shopping cart around and wishing I had a decent winter coat!

BTW... please give your used winter coats to a homeless person! Don't give them to a group that is going to "distribute" them because they DON'T! Take your coat and give it TO the person.

That money is for fruits/veggies as she gets some help through her local church she attends for other foods.

She hates the rules as well but goes along with them at this time,i will be moving close by her in another 3 months and when I do she will be living with me and hubby.

I hate that she has ta live in the projects and treated sub-human because of it.

How the fork do you think they would run welfare agencies without the staff. Once upon a time, whilst a tax lawyer. I happened to join a libertarian party. Much to my surprise, I found that quite a few of these so called libertarians were either unemployed or trying to scrounge party jobs. That has been my singular experience with so called small government types. Ironically, those who create tend to be sanguine about government and its infrastructure. Some may prefer less taxes. My advice is work hard and get off dependency rather than feel sorry for yourself. The state is handing you taxpayers money. It's hardly surprising that they will make you jump hoops.

Re: Living in Subsidized Housing
Hi,
I have not read your entire thread but have read enough to understand what you are going through. I just wanted to tell you that I feel for you. I am disabled myself after having multiple organ failure and a whole host of other medical problems. I have been denied disability benefits 3 times now. Hopefully my new claim will finally come through.

I am currently writing a book about the near death experience that I had. I have found that being an author is something I can do while working around health problems. Maybe that will work out. God willing. I have literally been living on nothing for the past 4 years. I understand what you are going through. I am sorry my friend. Sometimes you just have to laugh about it. That's all you can do and still keep your mind. Lol.

I just wanted you to know that you are not a looser or a mooch or a burden. You are a sweet lady. I can tell. Do not let other people's idiotic judgements and assumptions bother you! You matter! You are needed! You are loved!

People who have never had to deal with having a health problem have no clue or concept of what one who deals with health problems endures daily. Someday- they will. We are all human and we will all eventually suffer from health conditions. These judgmental people will really have a rude eye opening awakening coming to them. Very humbling too.

Just wanted to give you some encouragement and tell you not to let others get you down. Do not listen to their completely wrong opinions and assumptions. I have learned how to ignore, ignore, ignore. It has practically become my new motto. You take care and know that you are loved!

Clearly ,she can work part time ..with some illness' thats all you are able to do. Clearly she is trying to do better. Think about it. Memory loss is horrible, yet she strives. And is humble.

Yes, it's not about the number of hours, it's how much you earn. She will get a full review within 3 years time and most likely will be cut off from future benefits.

All this love talk means nothing to the Social Security Admin. It's all about your ability to work, your age and your education.

I don't feel very humble at the moment. I feel like poking some of these people's eyes out! Starting to feel like a broken record repeating stuff that was posted 5 pages back.

Anywho, I have to finish my chores and go to work. Y'all have a great day.

Dont be so judgemental,we all must realize never is a long time. So hopefully you will keep the health you have.
