Re: Living in Subsidized Housing
Lol I do work with alot of elderly properties. I know what I am talking about and deal with tenants like you everyday with their excuses and complaints. You have a husband and sounds like you both are working the system. And you probally met online because neither one of you work and sit online all day while the taxpayers pay your rent and your food stamps.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 46206313

The elderly properties we have we supply the computers and the internet. Are you using one of the property computers?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 46206313

My goodness what a chip you have.

No. I'm using the computer I saved for and bought with my own money. Just like my car parked outside. I paid cash for it after working my little job here at home and saving for two years.

I realize you work with some really shady folks, but not all of us are like that. And if you'd read back in the thread, I've already answered about my husband. He lives in the Netherlands. I live here. We have been parted for 5 years. I'm required to make 30k a year to sponsor him here which is why our application for residency was denied when we filed in 2008. He had to go back to the Netherlands since he couldn't stay here illegally. We aren't good at evading the law.

But remember, this is 2008. The economy was in shambles and he wasn't having the greatest time when he got back home finding work. He did a lot of temp work and finally landed a job with the Dutch IRS. But because it was a temp job with a week to week contract, it didn't meet the requirements of full-time permanent employment. He needed a job with a company that offered a contract of a year or more and he had to make a certain salary in order to qualify to sponsor me over there. We were so close. He found a company and after a year of working there, his contract was to to be renewed in April of this year. But because of a slow economy, the company had to cut back and he was one of the people who was let go. So, we had to start all over.

I feel like you are angry with me and I'm not sure why. Any monies that he has sent me or my parent's have given to help me has been accounted for on my taxes and reported to the Housing Authority. I've lived my life by the rules. I have a degree, I've worked some really crappy jobs which finally lead to the best job I've ever had when I worked in D.C. I had it "going on"! I lost everything to a medical bankruptcy. I've since paid off my debts from the settlement, even if it was only $10 at a time. I've worked hard to get better and find a new life that I can live around my disability. I feel very fortunate to be alive despite some rather disheartening experiences.

I'll tell you whatever you would like to know, within reason. But I wish you would explain why you seem so angry with me and such a need to prove that I am a criminal with ill intent. Would it make you feel better if I was?
 Quoting: Éireann

I don't know what it is that causes some people to automatically think that because someone is receiving assistance of any type - that the person receiving help has never lifted a finger for anything or worked, etc. Be that at it may, that is THEIR PROBLEM.

Sure am glad they are NOT GOD.

Re: Living in Subsidized Housing
Tenants get together and agree to hire out window washing and lawn care to someone's able bodied grandson or nephew. Or just some unemployed person who is willing to take on the job.

Some kid could get in there and wash all the windows and do all of the lawncare without various people having to set up and do each task individually. Most of the effort here would actually be in the setting up of equipment. One person -- or a two or three man crew -- could just set up, do it all, get paid and get it over with for everybody.

***This***. Except they'd probably say, "this isn't allowed".
 Quoting: InTheHood

You've got a point. They'd cry 'liability' factors.
So maybe approach United Way volunteers or local senior center for solutions, and be able to sign a waiver for liability.
Eireann I'm sure you probably already know talking on a line to HUD or other agency might get you thuggish uneducated answers.
Goes without saying expecting elderly and/or infirm to manage their own window washing on a monthly basis, knowing how much that costs for those on a low fixed income is punitive and irrational.

Say if you were to contact your local senior center you could let them deal with HUD or whatever with a resource and get that going for your elderly neighbors.
Hm, also Advocates for the elderly in your town.

Blah. I don't want more stuff, I just want to be left alone. I'm a grown woman. I don't need a set of rules to live by. I used to be someone once. Just because I'm broken now they seem to think that they can do with me as they please.
 Quoting: Éireann

Oh my goodness E. You are someone NOW. I always like your posts and I am so glad you are here.

I pray that you find an alternative living arrangement. That does sound overly controlling, over the limit, esp. for the elderly and those short on money. It sounds like rules for a country club or something.

I don't know much about HUD and stuff. At my mom's condo in FL, they have maybe 100 units and 2 or 3 of them are used for HUD individuals. They seem to work out well within that community. However, it seems to me that the places that are ALL HUD do not have enough rules. I don't know much - like I said.

I will be leaving the US to join my husband in Ireland by the end of this year. I'm fortunate as I have a way out of this mess. But before I leave, I want there to be some changes for the benefit of the elderly who live here. I won't allow them to be mistreated simply because they have no money and no recourse. It's abusive and intolerable and I won't stand for it.
 Quoting: Éireann

You are complaining about everything and all along you have a husband to go to. I can hardly feel sorry for you now. You really have no idea being without anything or no one.
Save the pity party for someone who needs it.
Sorry to be truthful.

Wow, what an ugly post! No doubt you feel yourself to be a special person, so righteous. You literally turn my stomach

Makes you feel powerful when you can make somebody explain themself to you. Then you can either ignore their plea for understanding or perhaps you may offer a few word to dismiss them.

You are nothing except a predator. Not even strong enough to take on a person at the top of their game, you prey upon the less fortunate

You are a sickening small human being.

Re: Living in Subsidized Housing
Good grief some of you fucktards on this thread are the most holier-than-thou people I've ever read. Eireanne worked and put money into the SS system. She is disabled but trying to get back to where she doesn't have to live the way she lives right now. She can't be with her husband yet because he is a citizen of another country and immigration laws have prevented it. Her concern about the rules of her housing is mostly because the rules are very difficult for the elderly people who live there, and possibly illegal (paying to care for common areas outside, overly invasive searches of the apartments beyond what is normally required/allowed by law etc.) Read the damn thread before you jump on her. She goes to great lengths NOT to drain the system. She is working and trying to progress despite a brain injury that really set her back. Her gold star is a gift from another GLPer.

Get the hell off of your high horses and thank God you are not in the same situation she is in. I would hope if you were you would handle it with the same character and dignity as she does.

I know a lady with a section 8 house. She has had it for 20 yrs and has never lived in it. She has someone mow the lawn and keeps it, just in case.

Ridiculous

How can she do that without anyone knowing? That's...unethical!

So this husband is in Ireland, evidently earning enough and she is still on welfare in the US!!!

Fucking disgrace!!!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 45285432

Actually, he's been out of work since April because the company he worked for had to lay off a bunch of people due to the slow economy.

He is looking for jobs in Ireland because the EU laws allow a non-EU spouse to live with her employed EU-spouse.

I'm really happy that you have a good career. I'm money stupid. I can balance my checkbook, but I couldn't figure the interest on a credit card so thank God I have never had one.

Not sure why you make such amazing assumptions and generalizations, but you're entitled to speak your mind. I respect that.

Oh really? They still have to be inspected by HUD. This is all sooooo confusing.

But I never put in an application to HUD. Just the application here where I live.

I need coffee first. Then I'll Google Tax Credit Housing. I don't even know what that means.
 Quoting: Éireann

While your 'Googling', think about the hungry and the dispossessed.

While you sip your coffee, think of the people living on the street.

I suspect you wont, just like you wont answer the posts that criticize you.

You have to worry about 'important' things like watering your lawn and washing the occasional window.

It's all about perspective, and you have none.

awesome post! & when she leaves the country to re-join her husband in Ireland that check she receives here & now in the US will STILL be available to her even in Ireland
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 44482383

Now why on earth would I continue to take disability when I'll be on my husband's insurance AND living and paying taxes in another country? I can't use Medicare anywhere but in the US so what would be the point of receiving disability when my husband will be able to provide for us once he is employed?

Nope. I'm not taking it with me. Someone else might need it.

 Quoting: Ms. Superduper

Absolutely! I'd miss you all too much! Minus some of the nasty stuff said on this thread, there are so many positive things that came out of my posting this thread. It's those things that keep me coming back.

Every thread has its good and bad, but on the whole, I find more good information on this site than on any MSM news site. There are so many different people with different perspectives and views. It's good to see the world through another person's eyes even if you disagree with them. Søren Kierkegaard is one of my favorite "modern" philosophers. He had some real gems of wisdom. Great thinker.

GLP is a great place and I've met some SuperDuper people here ;)

And as a final note...

My "wall" neighbor, Miss Linda, passed away yesterday morning at 3:46 AM. She is the lady who is a retired nurse. I loved her dearly and will miss our chats. She told really great stories of days gone by and I will miss our "coffee and cards" get togethers. She's damn good at Rummy! Gonna really miss her :(

I'm sorry to here this Eireann.

I just came home tonight to find out one of my neighbors had passed as well.

The disturbing thing is that she was found during bug spray/inspection day and the manager waited another 24 hours to call the authorities and remove her body when it was convenient for her to do so. Such disrespect. And a month from now you can bet everything she owned will be pawned off by the landlord- money pocketed so that the LL can do whatever it is she does with such funds.

Rest in Peace, Wanda.
