Re: Living in Subsidized Housing
As many of you know, I'm mentally disabled.

*pauses for laughter*

Besides having PTSD, I am losing my memory at a rather alarming rate. I have good days and bad days. If you ever follow my writing/posts, you can pretty much tell which days were good and which days were bad. Anyway, because I'm only 47 I am on disability but I don't qualify for Social Security for another 20 years. No worries. I am working at building my own business doing research. Not an easy task with a memory problem, but one has to do what one has to do.

Because my disability is only $699 a month, I need to live in a rent assisted housing facility. Here in Texas the waiting list for a Section 8 housing voucher is years long so I opted to rent in a housing program that is offered by the community where I live. It is overseen by HUD, but it is privately owned property which is reimbursed for the remainder of the rent due through a state HUD grant program.

Now because it is privately owned, they can make their own rules. Not a problem, right? Erm. Maybe. The Housing Authority is run by Board of investors. This is a very small town with about zip for crime and everyone practically knows each other by name. This board makes some really interesting rules. I'm just going to name a few to see what you all think. Now I'd like to point out that I am the youngest person in this complex which is made up of 16 one bedroom units. The rest of the people who live here are all retired elderly and are all widowed with grown children.

Once a month we have a housing inspection. These inspections get weirder and weirder as the months go by. While I can understand the reasoning behind some of the - rules - I can't help but find many of them personally offensive and horrendously disrespectful to the elderly living here.

1. They check my dresser drawers, closets, cabinets and other furniture drawers for hidden drugs or drug paraphernalia.

2. They require my apartment to be as clean as a hospital. I've been in some of the board member's houses and I can tell you that they do not live up to their own standards.

3. Even though we are all on a limited income, we are required to water the lawns around our apartments to keep bugs out. Anyone care to wonder a guess at how much my water bill runs? Some of these elderly live on far less since they were housewives and mothers and did not work outside of the home.

4. There can not be any dust, streaks, or dirt on the windows. All window blinds must be free of dust or dirt and not be damaged in any way. We pay to have the blinds put in, btw.

5. If we have a pet, we are required to pay a 300 dollar non-refundable deposit. Yes...a deposit which is non-refundable. It should be called a fee if it isn't refundable, but oh well.

Here are some of the other rules which really chap my ass.

1. Any family member who brings over a resident's personal pet, must pay a 300 dollar non-refundable deposit each time the animal visits and show proof of all shots. If the animal is going to live with the resident, the deposit need only be paid once. Failure to comply will result in eviction of the resident. Seriously.

2. All dogs must be kept on a short leash. Any one using a leash over three feet will be fined and the animal will be barred from the property. blink

3. All outside windows must be washed once a month. The siding and doors must be free of dust and dirt. Now wait a fucking minute. How is 89 year old granny suppose to fucking clean the god damned siding and wash windows that go 8 ft off the ground?

4. All areas outside of the apartment, including personal gardening areas, must be free of weeds. Failure to comply will result in a $50 fine for each day of noncompliance.

And it goes on and on. HUD doesn't have any such rules. I've spoken with the State Attorney's office and they said that because it is private property that the owners can make any rules that do not violate my Constitutional rights. Erm... what about the monthly searches? She said that is a grey area. A grey area? WTF? What about the watering? 120 a month in a Texas summer? I have to go for days without AC and my diet is far from nutritional just to comply with all of the stupid rules. I haven't been out to eat, gone out for a cup of coffee, or bought so much as a fucking candle for ambiance in eons. Can't afford it. No phone, TV or extras. This feels more like a punishment than a help. We're treated like subhuman criminals who live in prison. Our recourse? We can leave.

So for the folks who think that those of us who need public assistance to get by live footloose and fancy free - we most certainly do not. It's humiliating, degrading and totalitarian. It's why we call this complex "Nazi Square". And the rules keep coming. Sometimes two and three new ones a month. It's insane.

Thanks. Just needed to vent.

I admire you are able live in those circumstances. I could not do it. I find it also commenavle you seem to worry more avout others than yourself.

I think is a total lack of persoanl freedom. Its a way of bossing around defenseless people who are dependent. The rules are insane. To look in your drawers and invade your private space. That is the USA? The supposedly land of freedom. You would be better of in the dutch prison which I heard is very comfie,

I really find the comments about tax money laughable I myself have worked 22 years and paid taxes for 22 years. So if Some day I am in the bad situation you are in I am not using anyones money but my own. We pay 52 percent income tax here. It can happen to us all.

We all contribute to the taxes. The reason - should be - that taxes are paid is for the people and the country. Not to give away to warmongers and expensive trips on holiday. As a society we chose to take care of our ederly and disabled, and yes also the unemployed. We all can have bad luck. This should be done with integrity and dignity. We are supposed to be civilesed and take care of eachother.

Btw your picture looks really nice and reflects you are a caring person so am sure you deserved your subcriptiom gift.

I hope and wish your situation changes for your in positive ways. Keep charging on ahead.

Wow. Assume much? I know you can't read very well or you would know I have a University degree and have worked since I was 14. I had a very good job when I got sick. That was in 2003 and I was a really sick puppy then. I'm working my way back up the ladder rung, by rung.

And who said I'm Christian? You don't know anything about my beliefs. Nothing, actually.

And it's "you're" not your. You're is a contraction of you are. Your is possessive indicating that something belongs to the person being referenced.

Well yes, Obama WANTS to redirect aid FROM you TO that hypothetical mother of 10. That's what Obamacare does, take from old people and give to the young welfare mothers.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4991783

In 1997 Bill Clinton placed a 90 month per lifetime aid limit on your hypothetical 21 year old mother of 10. That includes dwindling food stamp payments as well. So you're 16 years behind reality.
Oh, and there's a work stipulation even for the mother of a newborn..which is pretty cruel and undermines the bonding process.

You have no idea of what is being taken from what resource fund anyway...and they're all drying up for the most vulnerable each year.
I don't believe any of the 99% is NOT being shaken down.

"Obamacare" doesn't even exist yet anyway. So this plan which the Feds back for 1 year is dumped on the states in 3 years. Both sides of the aisle turned this plan into an abortion in any case. There might not even BE an "Obamacare" even if we live that long.
 Quoting: DawaSatso

Your answer is misleading, whether intentionally or not.

The 90 month (that's 7 1/2 years!) limit doesn't include food stamps which have no time limit. With food stamps for 10, some money can be saved out for other expenses in one way or another. (selling the use of the food stamps at 50 cents on the dollar for example.)

If one fund is reduced and another is increased, and the two events are linked by the same or related legislation, it's fair to say that money is taken from one and given to the other. In any case, it's a large subsidy for a large family, that the mother willingly imposed on the taxpayers when she opened her legs so many times.

And I do hope there is NOT Obamacare. That's why I talk about it, to identify some of the many problems with it so that people are aware, in case it might make the resistance to it stronger.

So you hate OP and want her money for the inner city. There's a huge redistribution agenda going on now.

Maybe you even hate her for being able to comply with all the stupid rules and hence get the subsidized housing, but some other constituencies fail to follow the rules and so they do not get it.

That's all I can figure, for such a post that's both wrong and obnoxious.

Great post :) There's a reason I married a man from the Netherlands. The Dutch love of personal freedom and the belief that you can't legislate morality are two things I believe in wholeheartedly. It is such a wonderful trait about the Dutch, but also what has caused them so much grief of late. You are so tolerant and so open minded and believe so strongly that each person should be able to be free to pursue life, that you've been overrun by people who do not hold these concepts sacred and they have used the best things about the Dutch to take advantage of them. It just pisses me off :(

So you worked for over 30 years and have absolutely nothing to show for it i.e. no house of your own and only get less than $700 for disability?? You must have had a really shitty job then. I've only been working roughly 12 years and right now I can look at my social security statement online that details how much money I would get per month if I was disabled, how much my wife would get if I died and also how much I will get if I make it to retirement. Roughly 6-7 years of working for me was shitty jobs held during HS and College where I didn't make much also. The other 5-6 years are years I worked a good job with decent income and my most recent statement I just looked at says that if I were to become disabled right now my benefit payment would be $1814 per month for just myself alone. Anyone interested in checking this out can check your own info here. [link to www.socialsecurity.gov]

Maybe you even hate her for being able to comply with all the stupid rules and hence get the subsidized housing, but some other constituencies fail to follow the rules and so they do not get it.

That's all I can figure, for such a post that's both wrong and obnoxious.

Fair enough, OP is griping about the rules but she is following them. Thus she qualifies for the help.

I am not on benefits (not boasting, I am just lucky) and so I should have a choice about where my charity goes. When the government takes it in taxes and redistributes it to preferred constituencies, that is unfair.

You should not even be on tax subsidies if you advocate the free market. And if you are, don;t gripe. Go cap in hand as it is charity in your political world and charity is a gift.

Hey OP.

You may want to check in to lyme disease.

PTSD, chronic fatigue, depression, IBS, chrons diease, MS, cognitive dysfuntion, and all that stuff can often be traced back to low level infections that one's immune system can not clear on it's own.

I put lyme disease as a major culprit for many undiagnosed health issues.

50% of IRAQ dogs have been found to have lyme disease. Sorry for no link, but there was a study that shows that.

Check it out. Recovering is difficult, but can be done if one takes care of their gut and avoids the right foods.

God Bless.

There might not even BE an "Obamacare" even if we live that long.

dude, quit your bitching..sounds like I'm paying for it anyway not you. If you don't like it then go get a job flipping burgers. Sounds like I have to pay your water bill and mine. What chaps my ass is people like yourself that complain about how they are disabled and can't work but yet are competent enough to hack out a lengthy dissertation about their problems on a computer. If you can do that, then you can do other work on your computer to help you get off of tax payer support. Now man up and do what you have to to not be a burden on society.

I'm not some 21 year old with 10 kids all on welfare. I worked for 30 plus years so keep your anger for those that get without giving. I also work from home. It's not much, but it's getting better. If you'd actually read my post you would see that the majority of the people who live here are elderly. It is them I am concerned about. I do understand the stigma associated with those who receive any kind of public assistance, but not everyone who does fits the stereotype. The lady who lives next door to me is a retired nurse. She is 68 years old and has COPD from years of terrible asthma. She was born with it and she went to college - twice - to become a nurse. She went twice because technology changed and she wanted her degree to reflect her up-to-date knowledge of nursing. Get facts about people before you spout off. I hope you never find yourself in this situation. Your arrogance is so typical.

I lost everything to a medical bankruptcy. I don't really remember much about filing for disability. A case worker handled all of that and I just sort of nodded. My parents want me to go see a disability lawyer, but I'm like - why? The actual amount is 804, but they deduct 105 for my Medicare premium which leaves 699. I pay all of my Dr co-pays and whatnot. It's not all that bad really. After losing all of my material stuff and my savings and having to live without it for so long, you'd be surprised at just how little you really need.

I didn't get a really good paying job until 1994. I worked mostly for colleges and companies who needed research analysts and the pay wasn't that great. The work was awesome, though. I worked on some really interesting projects so the money kind of came second to the opportunity to learn.

No one should be laughing at anyone who's mentally disabled. Hang in there, OP.

I can understand that there are rules for living in subsidized housing but dag, those seem a bit out there. Going thru your drawers and closets every month? What a violation of privacy! If they suspect drugs, bring in a dog and let him sniff around. Otherwise, they need to leave you alone. Is there anywhere else you can live that offers subsidized housing? I agree, it sounds like a prison.

I don't have a clue what that sentence means. Maybe I'm having a brain fart moment, but I absolutely don't understand what you're saying so I don't even know how to respond. blink

But yes. I am a believer in small Federal Government and the majority government being handled by the individual states. My situation is unique and, hopefully, not permanent. The science of medicine is constantly finding new ways to treat brain trauma and I have hope that mine will be fixed. I'm also trying a number of natural remedies since many have suggested that nutritional deficiencies can lead to other serious problems. I don't believe that welfare should be a life choice, I think it should be a short term solution. For the completely disabled and indigent elderly, I believe I have a responsibility to make sure they are cared for. But welfare should not be a way of life for those who have the opportunity to get better educated and find gainful work.

For the 33 years I worked, I never once thought of the deductions from my paycheck to "The Fund" to be a burden. I naively believed they were being used to help those in need. I had no idea that the system was being used to create an assured voter base and an easily controlled society. I was thinking of my mom and dad when they were too old to work or the guy working next to me and how he would manage if he got sick and was unable to work. How would he feed his kids? I've always been a little too much on the trusting end of things - very naive and not really aware that the programs being advertised as beneficial were actually being misused with nefarious intent. My bad. But getting sick did help me in many ways. I got my head out of my books long enough to take a look at what was going on in the world around me. I liked what was in the books better, but WOW what an eye opener this experience has been. I'm actually glad for it. Had it not happened, I would have never seen what is really going on in the world.

I think both of you should look into this closer with HUD. They may be breaking guidelines set up and HUD can look into this for you. From your description, the owners of your property fall under the HUD's federal regulations, regardless if they are privately owned.

The last person who called ended up evicted.

After you call, they launch an investigation and the person who complained doesn't remain anonymous since you must make a personal complaint. At least, that's what I was told by some of the long-timers here. I'll give them a call and see what I can find out. Thanks for the link!!

The other thing I forgot to mention are the rules the management put in place where residents have to take care of the landscaping and exterior siding, etc. I believe what they are doing is against Texas laws, which in each State HUD uses for their guidelines. Anything outside the apartment or rental unit in a "multi-unit" community is considered "common area". The owners/management company is required to upkeep the common grounds, not the residents. They can not require a resident to do this work. You can also file a complaint with the Texas State Attorney General for human rights violations of the disabled and elderly.
