Someone paid for it. It was an anonymous gift. No one has ever come forward so I could thank them. One day I just had a year's subscription and I don't know who gifted it.

Fair enough, OP is griping about the rules but she is following them. Thus she qualifies for the help. I am not on benefits (not boasting, I am just lucky) and so I should have a choice about where my charity goes. When the government takes it in taxes and redistributes it to preferred constituencies, that is unfair.
