I always had kitties but alas no more as my hubby is allergic, but I'm enjoying your kitties by proxy!

They act like that because it's prey behavior - they're hunting. I think that's why they respond to the loud whisper too as it probably sounds like something a little prey animal would make. With kitties, it's huntin', eatin',sleepin', washin', and lovin'. Not necessarily in that order :)

I do that often yes.
 Quoting: Korats01

Repetitive drops of water from a faucet.....can entertain a cat for hours.

When they bat at the falling drop.....it disappears and makes their fur wet?

Hours will be spent on figuring out...where the drop went, and how come more keeping falling from the faucet.

Re: CAT LOVERS - fess up! Do you enjoy playing mind games with your cat?
I know there's a lot of cat lovers on here (as well as tons of cat haters) so I wanted to compare notes with you guys.

I have a background in psych so it's fascinating to try to understand how their minds work. Does anyone play "spy kitty"? That's when you make eye contact with the cat and quickly hide out of their sight. Then after a second or two you pop up again, make eye contact again and quickly disappear - cats hate not knowing what's going on so they'll start getting closer to investigate. This is how you can play "green light red light" with them. If you don't know what that is, check out this video:

I like making anthropological observations of their behavior. I know this makes me sound like an old crazy cat lady, but I'm really more interested in understanding their behavior. I have noticed that if you whisper to a cat, you'll have its attention, not sure why that is. It has to be a loud whisper, but they seem to be intrigued by the sound. I've also noticed that cats like peer pressure.... I know it sounds crazy but it's true and I'd like to ask some of you with multiple cats to try it and let me know what your findings are. A stray cat we had temporarily taken in had a litter of 7 kittens which are now 2 months old and I hand-raised, so I get to observe all kinds of kitten mischief and cat culture. I have noticed that if you egg a cat on, they'll totally go for it.. say kitty spots a ball of yarn on the ground and is contemplating getting it, if you sit and pressure him by saying "do it, kitty", "go get it, kitty", "come on, kitty", "do it kitty, do it!" they will almost always immediately act on it. I first noticed this with my old cat Zeus, and I have noticed it as well with these kittens. Also, if they're feeling particularly playful and pouncey, and cat A walks by cat B and I tell cat B "go get him kitty", he'll do it about 75% of the time. I'd like to know if anyone else has tried this and if it worked.

I'd love to hear any other observations or anecdotes from fellow cat observers, please feel free to share! hf

There were some nights when my older male cat would start talking out loud right at the stroke of 9pm and go thru on to 2am. He was mostly saying "hello" & i'm sure you've heard this sound at least once .

I was so fed up with the whole thing as I wasn't getting any sleep and it was going on 1:30am. I got up out bed and
calmly went out to him in the living room.

He was sitting on the sofa and I looked at him and whispered:
"It's time to be quiet" he raised his head and his eyes widened and I never heard another peep out of him the rest of the early am into the day.........LOL

Love this. Used to play this "game" with my favorite gal quite a bit. Called it "Peek-A-Boo" and she would always lose. I'd throw in a giggle sometimes as I hid and it would drive her insane.tounge Thought I was the only crazy human that did this...Darn, I miss that Gal.

My oldest cat, a little female would punish all the other animals if I said they did something bad. It was funny seeing her swat the boy cats and dog on the tail/rump if she knew I was upset with them. Always made me smile. I guess it was a sort of peer pressure or telepathy she got from me.

Re: CAT LOVERS - fess up! Do you enjoy playing mind games with your cat?
I have 2 large male cats that I found when they were only a couple of days old. They had been bitten everywhere by the daddy cat (so the female could mate again). I rushed them to the vet who said they probably wouldn't make it, and if they did, one would probably lose it's leg. They had to be completely shaved. I had to bottle feed them, clean their wounds and give them medicine several times a day. Well, they both made it, all limbs intact. They are now full grown, the most loving cats I've ever had so far. But, yes, they love games! I'm so glad they have each other, they can edge each on to play fight, get the "crazies" by running after each other back and forth, yet in the end, cuddle and wash each other's face.

Thank you so much to you and OP and so so sorry to hear about your loss. It sucks doesnt it! This house feels so empty. Walking up to it knowing she's not here is killing me and I can cant seem to settle. She was bought into this house by someone else but chose me as her pal and It was I that found her crushed and lifeless. Quite fittting. I feel so honered but really effing misserable to have lost what feels like my soulmate.

On the day of her passing, I lay down to sleep asking someone to wake me at a certain time. Just before they woke me, we met in a dream. I was walking up the path and spotted what looked like Nugget either on or in a car. As I got closer I knew it was here and she knew it was me. She jumped down or through the car and stood on her back legs at me. She was making losts of noise and trying to throw her front paws around me. I was left with the feeling that she was confused and didnt know why she couldnt experience each other.

So for the meantime, I am heart broken.

It's amazing how different all their personalities are.
 Quoting: CharlestonSC

This. Much more individual than dogs and clearer to see.

Ive met the endlessly friendly cats that just smile with their eyes and love me to rub the sweet spots until they roll over on my hand... and then there ones that seem autistic in behavior despite being domesticated - and I can come across both on a small walk down my street. Fascinating imo.

Something I observe in cats frequently is their preoccupation with something that appears to be beyond human perception.
For eg I can walk past that has been lying round with noone round, no visual or audible distractions, I appear suddenly walking past being a big new visual object making sound (something that would grab any animals attention usually) and it can be staring somewhere completely random but completely fixated, or although following a dialogue between an invisble bunch of people / tracking a butterfly that isn't even there.

What you see kitty? What you hear?

When I had cats I always loved mindgames. Shame the one I had for most of my life was a docile lifeless moggie that only showed signs of life when he wanted food. I loved playing with my friends Burmese and would love a Siamese myself because of their craziness.

One of my cats plays fetch. She will bring me whatever she wants to play with (usually something shiny!) and I have to throw it for her until she gets fed up. She also knows exactly where the treats are and will put her paw on the jar when the cupboard door is opened.

She is also great at Red Light Green Light!

My other cat is always bringing us her toys as if she's "caught" them, meowing as she goes. Not that fun at 2am in the morning really! She also has my dad wrapped around her paw, and follows him around meowing at him when she wants cuddles. He never really was a "cat person" (but was outnumbered) so it's really funny watching him walking around with a little fluffy dictator sitting on his shoulder (her preferred method of transport.

And hello, this is my first post!

Lol. I do this too! Cats are naturally curious and can't stand "not knowing". Green light red light or whatever it's called works so well because it nags at their sense of curiosity. "Hey, where did my human go?, he was just there- better go see what happened to him." Similarly when you hide yet they can still hear you, it plays upon their theory of mind in a way, because they know you're there even if they can't always see you, and I guess also looking for you is part of their hunting behavior. Ahh I could go on and on, I'm so very grateful for you feline-inclined folks. I just find them so fascinating. I have 6 right now and they're about 3, 4 months old so they're a pack and that's the best way to "study" them, ha ha. There's an alpha male, an alpha female, a pair of twins that are very mischievous and get into trouble together and a pair of runts (male and female) who are the babies and really cute and playful and whiny in a meow-y kind of way. They're all very sweet and affectionate and love cuddling with the golden retriever. The dog thinks they're his kitties, lol. It's cute and all but come night time if I don't herd them into their room to sleep they will loudly run around the house chasing each other and knocking stuff down, it seriously sounds like a bunch of wild teenagers tearing loose through the house - if you have ever had to herd kittens, you'll know what I mean.

Re: CAT LOVERS - fess up! Do you enjoy playing mind games with your cat?
I don't know if any of you are Queen fans, but Freddie Mercury was a big cat lover, even calling to talk to them over the phone when he was away on tour.

All of his cats were saved from the shelters [ I think he had 14 in all], but his most beloved kitty was named Delilah.

One his last album [not the very last when the last album when he was alive] had a song about Delilah.

[link to www.youtube.com]

In fact his "goodbye" video to his fans featured Freddie wearing a vest showing all of his feline friends.

Warning: this is a very hard video to watch as Freddie was very close to death at this point due to him being sick with AIDs.

[link to www.youtube.com]

Also, I really don't trust people who don't like cats. Hitler, was a cat hater.

[link to mysmelly.com]

Anyway I have a cat that has came back from the dead three times now.

The first time was Christmas eve one year after he died.

The second time was Easter this time two years after he died.

Its the same cat every time. All of his mannerisms, such as NO human food except for hand fed fruits, always afraid of thunderstorms, same color, same voice, same personality.

Each time he passes away I thanked God for sending him to me, and so far he has always came back.[youtube]

This very morning @ 4am I went out and attached some flowers from her grave to the tree that I found her under on Tuesday. I'd say time of passing was between 4/4.30am due to her state of death. I awoke about 4am, sat bolt upright and spent 3 hours wondering where she is/was, assuming out having fun. By 6am I had that dreaded feeling but moving swiftly on.

Deffo lost a part of me with this one, sheeeeet.

Anyways,

The image is of her resting place, under a Yew tree (the tree of creation.) It was like a climbing frame to her and If you look closely, you'll see the scarring from her scratching sessions, LOL. This was also one of her 'dusting' spots too so it seems quite fitting to place her here. The lump of granite is going to have her name and dates engraved on it real soon, Bless Her and the 2 recycling crates were set up for her to ly under and we're going to move her patches of cat grass over to here also.

At least when people ask where Nugget is, we can say 'in the garden'. rockon

lmao cats are awesome. I bet he didn't know what to think. Good job! You should try making monkey sounds or roaring like a lion and get ready for some really weird looks. Also, get real close to them and sit there very quietly. They'll expect you to "do something" so when you don't, it drives them nuts. Just sit next to it and keep inching closer and closer without saying anything or without looking at them. Ha ha. Once he settles down and looks away, begin speaking very rapidly in a loud whisper but don't move at all, just whisper rapidly. It doesn't matter what you say, the cat is gonna look at you like you're freaking nuts. Mind games like that, I know... I'm horrible but I find such amusement in it.
