We want to pay cash for a house to not have any mortgage payments. Don't want to have to shovel snow.

Thinking Florida, or maybe Arizona, or Tennessee?

Any suggestions?

Or Texas in gated American communities.

I just met a fellow from Alabama that spent a couple of years in Costa Rica, said it was the best place he'd been and dirt cheap. Longs to go back.

You might try looking at a couple of issues of International Living if you're willing to emigrate.

I've heard that Costa Rica is nice, but we don't speak Spanish. Seems like there would be language / culture issues.

Yes, I have back in 2000. So far the most beautiful country I have ever visited.

Back then, the price of living was cheap, but I've heard that it is no longer the case.

Nicaragua offers a much better alternative. Properties are 10 times cheaper for the same and the masses haven't discovered it yet.

You can find relatively cheap property in Argentina. Uruguay isn't bad either. I like their laws.

If you really wanna go cheap, like 40-50K euro for a villa with a big garden fully furnished, try Bulgaria.
