I actually think it's Mercury again, but why is it early?? maybe its an optical illusion lol Well the fact it's in the same place seems to indicate Mercury, but what's with the MOON? It's been there for three days now! Observe everything, trust no one and always follow the money! Don't look over there, look over here! I've a PhD and a telescope trust me! Anonymous Coward User ID: 37159590 Bulgaria 10/06/2013 08:09 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It's a distortion in the optics of the HI instrument. When an object is just out of the fov it will appear distorted as if it's in the fov. This distorted image of Mercury will now start to dissapear and the "real" planet will appear again on 10/11 Oct this time moving from right to left. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 37159590 Well I disagree. Mercury had left the field of view for a good two days before this appeared, and why does it appear to have a Moon? Mercury has no moon last time I checked? Observe everything, trust no one and always follow the money! Don't look over there, look over here! I've a PhD and a telescope trust me! Mercury has no moon last time I checked? It's a "good two days" but it's at the far "right part" of its orbit (from stereo B pov) . This means that there's very little motion on the X axis and most of the motion is on the Z axis (away from the spacecraft) [link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov] . The "moon" will now look as it's being absorbed by the bright blob as the distortion will start to decrease. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 47961019 Germany 10/06/2013 08:24 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I believe its a lens flare: [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] image artifacts - Internal reflections Light reflecting inside the telescope optics, and diffracting off edges within the telescopes, can produce some interesting effects. Consider this series of images showing the planet Venus leaving the field of view of the HI1-B telescope between Janary 26-31, 2009. As Venus approaches the edge of the field-of-view, a ring shape is seen apparently coming out of the planet. This is caused by reflections of the bright planet off of the camera barrel. (If you look closely at the full-field version of the January 26, 2009 image above, you'll see a large, faint bubble on the left side of the image, which is also an internal reflection of Venus.) The ring grows progressively larger as time goes by. On January 31, a horizontal streak appears near the position where Venus disappeared. This latter effect is caused by diffraction off of the optical baffles. Click here for a more detailed explanation. |

Okay, so how come the moon is clearly visible in the last two images, why have they not labelled it in the image as Mercury and what's the point giving clear dates if you can still see them when you shouldn't be able to? Quoting: More questions than answers! Because this is not a moon, nor it is Mercury - it's a diffraction of the light from Mercury. The planet itself is outside the fov (you can see it in the hi2-non-rdiff images). It's the same as saying that images of the lens flares on multiple pictures are showing the "nibiru/planet-x" and not the light from the Sun. |
