Does anyone here have a tropical fish tank? I have a question...
I bought a pair of German blue rams. The fist week I had them in my 40 gallon community tank they laid eggs. I read up and it said remove the pair and eggs to a separate tank because the other fish would eat the fry.

So I move them to a separate tank and the parents ate the eggs. I just kept them there thinking they would lay again.

In the community tank I have a female German blue, and two male electric blues. 7 neons and a Cory cat.

Get up to find the German blue and electric blue have laid eggs in there now.

Is it better in a community tank or separate tank? This is so confusing.

Hope your fish are certified ones. 90% of tropical fish die in harvesting because cyanide is used in their capture. This destroys the reefs and the fish.

You might be able to put a small divider between the eggs and the rest of the tank until they hatch, then let Darwin take over.

What do you mean by certified? They were purchased from a heathery in the USA not wild caught.

They should be fine then. Wild caught ones are the big problem as people trying to make a living use cyanide to incapacitate the fish. Half die on the spot...

well hell, just smack me in the head then.

I'd still try to segregate the eggs in the same tank, unless you have a small 5 gallon spare or something.

Unless you plan to sell the hatchlings, then use a different tank.

Your community tank is obviously better suited for procreation...the fish know this. Let nature take it's curse.....should be relaxing to watch it unfold.

Being a fish parent is stressful. I didn't know two different types of fish would spawn. The eggs are fertile though, that much I can tell.

Might end up with a tank of mules...lol

Yes, one of those nursery traps or make sure there's enough vegetation and other stuff for the little ones to hide. Some will survive, and then eat their own kids.

Re: Does anyone here have a tropical fish tank? I have a question...
Just FYI for other fish people out there.

I've had tanks most of my life and got my fish at the store like other hobbyist do.

However, I happened to be on ebay about a month ago and saw they sell live fish and plants.

Prices were reasonable, sellers had great ratings, and live guarantee delivery. All breeders within the USA. I'd never ordered fish before but took the chance.

What I can say, every fish arrived healthy, fat and happy and in beautiful color. Better then what I find at local stores.

Out of the 5 rams purchased within the month 4 now have paired and spawned, which to me is a testament to their Heath.

Just thought I'd put that out there for any other fish people.

I have lots of plants in all the tanks and went out and got baby fry food. Just hope I do this right. I'd hate to feel like a baby fry murderer...lol
