New Madrid Seismic Zone - past 7 days

 Quoting: Simple27

The New Madrid quakes of 1811-12 occurred during an especially cold winter (in the middle of the Dalton Minimum). Not sure if there is any weather correlation, but Farmer's Almanac is predicting a very cold winter. Diamond at Oppenheimer Ranch believes there will be NMSZ activity this winter. Coming from SoCal, it always felt like warm Santa Ana wind conditions were "earthquake weather."

Sounds like the gulf will get a lot of rain.

Last night heading west through Williams AZ through 35 miles of construction and trucks backed as far as you could see a thunder storm dumped 4 inches of snow!!!!!

For what it's worth, I just happened to check the farmer's almanac winter outlook a week or so ago. For my region (Missouri), they predict above average temps all winter except December, but above-average precipitation overall.

I don't think we have enough EQs here to have "earthquake weather". If we do have such a thing, I'm not sure what that would be. I guess super cold if we're going to go off 1811-1812. I hope they're right about the above-average precip! We are overdue for a good winter!

Zeke, you might be interested in this site (and their FB). I've followed these guys for a while and they are extremely accurate. They will eventually come out with their detailed winter forecast for the season, and they will update it as we get into winter. It's worth looking out for. I'm interested to see what they predict.

In Quake-Prone California, Alarm at Scant Insurance Coverage

<50%
Despite an aggressive advertising campaign by the state to promote earthquake insurance, only 13 percent of homeowners have it. And fewer than one out of 10 commercial buildings, which include everything from low-rise office buildings to the high-rise office towers of Los Angeles and San Francisco, are insured for earthquakes, according to the California Department of Insurance.

With the median price of a home in California now above $500,000, estimates of the potential uncovered losses in an earthquake run into the hundreds of billions of dollars. Economists say a large earthquake could have serious repercussions for local California banks. And with one-fifth of America’s $10 trillion in mortgage debt held in California, Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, the government mortgage finance giants that guarantee much of America’s mortgage debt, are also exposed to the risk, economists say.

CoreLogic, a real estate research company, estimated that a 7.3 magnitude earthquake along the Puente Hills Fault in Los Angeles would cause economic losses of as much as $450 billion, more than twice as much as the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina, the costliest United States natural disaster to date.

“In the Bay Area, 90 percent of the properties are not insured,” he said. “How many hundreds of billions of dollars is that in potential uninsured losses? it’s astounding when you think of it.”

A Coronal Hole Sandwich with a Side of Aurora: Solar Storm Shortie 09-04-2018

The Sun may be spotless and quiet right now, but it wont last. Two coronal holes will soon be rotating into the Earth-strike zone. The first, beginning in the next few days, will give us new chances for aurora. High latitudes will enjoy the best views, but by September 10th, mid-latitudes might also get a chance for a show.
