If the quake is more shallow, as the energy travels it typically loses magnitude with each quake that occurs along the way. Unless an area skips and doesn't release any energy, in which case pressure builds a bit so the next spot might be slightly larger than it should've otherwise. So, the Vancouver quake was fairly shallow/avg. at 10km, it should spark activity in Cali but the eqs should be smaller, like a full mag or so, I think. If that same energy travels all the way across the craton, it will continue to lose strength as those releases occur. That's my understanding of it. Of course, there are always exceptions! Hence we are all still here trying to figure it out! |
