Tens of thousands without power as severe weather moves through, with heavy downpours, flash flood warning, swim hazards
By: Katherine Rosenberg-Douglas, Chicago Tribune
"At least 25,000 customers were left without power from early morning severe weather on Sunday as the slow-moving system camped out over the Chicago area longer than expected, creating the chance of torrential downpours and hazardous swimming conditions, forecasters said."

Yeah, we had a really bad one here in '08. Everyone still calls it "storm of the century". It was definitely the worst storm I've witnessed. The whole place - city, county, wherever - looked like a war zone. Many areas were without power for a week, some more.

That pic is really cool!

I have never seen the word "derecho" before and had to look it up. We get straight line and down draft winds but I think this is more likely in the midwest where the winds and storms blow straight across for a long while.

I hadn't heard of it before 2012..

Its a large lined storm that moves really quickly. The one that hit D.C. formed over chicago - then 6 hours later was in the metropolitan area.

I guess the speed and intensity of the storm define whether it's a deracho or not?

Before a Grand Solar Minimum, climate change intensifies big time, from what I have read. Also, before a new glacial period begins (most call this an Ice Age, even though we are currently in the warming phase of an Ice Age), storms and climate change swing from warm and pleasant to crazy highs in the summer and then lows in the winter.

How "they" know this when no records we kept during the last so called Ice Age, is beyond me
