Yes, so much change in our lives. I started typing on one of those old black typewriters you see in antique stores or flea markets now and then. In college I had a portable typewriter, a bit easier to type on. Then came the IBM electric with the ball fonts that were interchangeable. Wow.
My kids went to college with the first of the word processors,
then the big computers, then everything just went exponential with the refinements. Now I cannot keep up, took me forever to get off of Windows XP, but finally couple years ago went to Windows 7, and refuse to go further with that.
Remember, when I was a child we still used out houses, chopped wood for wood stoves, and hand pumped water from the ground.
A few people here and there would have a radio, so many would gather around their radio for the news and the drama story series.

Now they are talking about hooking up people's brains to the computers so everyone is connected into one giant global brain or something.

I don't want to be around for that, it's just plain stupid, and unnecessary.

You've seen and experienced a lot in your lifetime, it's quite amazing. Don't feel old, because I'm in the same computer boat as you! Finally gave up my XP and then purposely got Windows 7 because that was when 8 had just been rolled out and everyone was complaining about it. Still use 7 and will continue to do so until this computer dies.

This all sounds way to familiar to me as well. In JC one of the first courses that I had to take for computer science was understanding how to use push cables to program a card boards for a sorting machine. The instructor said that this was all out of date when she was instructing the class. Then on to a fortran class with punch cards that you turned in each day and got the results the next morning if your program ran or nulled out.

And to windows started with DOS 1 here and on to DOS 2.2 then on to win95, win98, winME and on and on. I have just updated most friends and my computers to windows 10 while you can for free. You can get the install from microsoft and do an upgrade from within windows 7 and there you have it.

Ahhh such memories of college and the years at work. What fun it has been.

Me too, was afraid of the windows 8 reports. I burn up a computer every couple years, (because I don't know crap about computers and don't want to bother the kids) and go to ebay to get a windows 7 refurbished with wifi. They're always very good. Daughter about 2 years ago got me a fancy tablet with all kinds of stuff on it; she kept talking about "the cloud" and showed me how to ask the damn thing a question. I politely went through the whole tutorial. I have not touched it, and still using my kindle fire they got me years ago...works for internet, and I can play jewels and solitaire on it. What more do I need? To be fair, they did teach me everything I do know about computers--but I have told them not to get me anything new as I am just too lazy to learn new things. Switching over a computer takes me 4-5 days of all the b.s. you have to do. I have a list of dozens of things to be done.

LOVE THE TYPING FROG !!! LOL !!! PERFECT !!!

In 1963 I worked for some grad sociologist in college helping them with their research...we had to pencil in the cards when questionnaires came in,,then send them out to some company who ran the cards through a huge machine to get the results.
About 1987 my son in high school got a used IBM (256 if I remember)...he would put stock market things into it each day, and it would grind away all night in the basement before it added to his previous stuff. Interestingly, he said this was "artificial intelligence".

Anyway, you have all earned a rest from my ramblings,,,
best get to some chores before the day flies away...

Not sure why but we have a buoy in event mode in the north pacific, south of Alaska. Looks like there was a big drop, then it went back up to normal level again.

[link to www.ndbc.noaa.gov (secure)]

ETA: This is somewhat near that mag5 in the N. Pacific that was reported a few days ago on USGS, then scrubbed. That quake was epicentered a good bit north (and slightly west) of this buoy, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Normally smaller ones like that don't set off the buoy. Of course, sometimes as buoy can go off and we never really know why. I just edited my comment, but there was a 5-something EQ a few days ago Simple saw on USGS, then it was deleted. Might just be a coincidence, but who knows.

The best time to watch a meteor shower is when the radiant point is high in the sky, and that will be the case for the Quadrantids when they peak early Saturday morning. Shooting stars will originate from near the constellation Ursa Major, more commonly known as the Big Dipper. However, shooting stars will be visible in all areas of the sky.
Brief, intense peak of January’s lone meteor shower to occur Friday night

Just a small preview of the danger window we are live in...

The Pentagon said the U.S. military killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force,
in Baghdad Friday at the direction of Trump. The attack is expected to draw severe Iranian retaliation
against Israel and American interests. - Ken Martin, “Democrats Call U.S. Killing of Iranian General
‘Reckless,’” foxbusiness.com, January 3, 2020.
Welcome to a New Year, a new decade, and a new ingress of Mars into Sagittarius. As reported in this
column several times in the past, the passage of Mars through Sagittarius-Capricorn has a remarkable
correspondence with major crises erupting in the Middle East, and often corresponding with a period
danger and threats to Israel from her neighbors, or from within.
Mars entered Sagittarius January 3, as the attack began, and will depart Capricorn on March 30. What
makes this period even more disconcerting is the longer-term conjunction of Saturn and Pluto that takes
place next week, on January 12, 2020. With an orb of up to 18 months, this 32-37-year cycle was present
at the start of World War I and the ending of World War II. It last unfolded in November 1982, coinciding
with the Iran-Contra cover-up of secret weapons’ transactions between the U.S. and Iran following the
Islamic Revolution that toppled the Shah of Iran and led to the creation of an Islamic republic.
Stock markets of the world were doing quite well prior to this military strike. On January 2, the first day
of trading in the New Year, all U.S. stock indices rallied to new all-time highs. The DJIA futures sold off
over 300 points in the overnight market, but started to rally back after the first hour of trading on Friday.
New all-time highs were recorded in Brazil, Switzerland, and India as well last week.
The German DAX also came close to making an all-time high, soaring to 13,425 on January 2, just shy of
its record of 13,596 set on January 23 2018. The Netherlands AEX index rallied to 607, its highest mark
since May 2001. China’s Shanghai Composite rose to its highest mark since April 29, 2019. All in all, it
has been a very good holiday season for world equity markets, despite the pullback on Friday.
The military escalation between Iran and the U.S. was a positive for Gold and the Swiss Franc. Gold
soared to 1554 on Friday, January 3, re-testing it 6-year high made in early September. Silver rallied to
18.32 its highest mark since November 4. The Swiss Franc continued to serve the currency world as a
safe haven during troubled times, rising to 1.0420 on Friday, its highest level since September 2018.
Other commodities also performed very well, with Crude Oil soaring to 64.09, its highest mark since
April 30, while Soybeans soared to $9.49/bu, its highest price since June 2018. If it wasn’t for the
outbreak of military hostilities, all would be well in the financial world. But Mars is now in Sagittarius, so
the tensions of geopolitical political threats may be just starting. Mars is war-like, and Sagittarius knows
no bounds when it decides to act with aggression. It can be restless, reckless, overpowering, and takes no
prisoners. It may be hard to stop, once unleashed. It can coincide with large price swings in many
markets, including equities.
