About 70 people in their 20s chartered a plane from Austin, Texas, to Mexico for spring break two weeks ago. They went against the advice of White House officials who asked that people avoid gathering in groups of more than 10 and nonessential air travel. Now 44 of those people have tested positive for coronavirus -- all of them University of Texas at Austin students, a university spokesman told CNN on Wednesday. An elected official had a blunt message for the spring breakers. "Quit being an a**," Texas House Speaker Dennis Bonnen told CNN affiliate KXAN. "Get over yourselves. Whether you think this is an issue or not, it is. Whether you think it could affect you or not, it does. The reality of it is, if I'm a college kid who's going to spring break in Mexico, you're affecting a lot of people. Grow up." What's also alarming is that some of the passengers who went on the trip to Cabo San stalker, Mexico, took commercial flights home, the Austin Public Health Department said. |

These devices are used for patients suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) caused by COVID-19, the disease caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus. The helmet surrounds the patient’s entire head to supply oxygen and is sealed with a soft, airtight collar that wraps around the neck. In 2016, researchers from the University of Chicago Medicine led a study showing that using these helmets instead of standard face masks that cover the nose and mouth helps critically ill patients breathe better and can prevent them from needing intubation with a ventilator machine. Patients with helmet ventilation also spent less time in the intensive care unit and had better survival. On March 31, 2020, UChicago Medicine pulmonologists John Kress, MD, and Bhakti Patel, MD, were featured in an NBC News story about the helmet-based ventilators and the small company that produces them. View the news video below or read the NBC News article. In a second study published in 2018, the researchers followed up with the same patients after one year. The patients who received helmet ventilation were more likely to be functionally independent than those given a face mask, and spent more days living at home. |

@TChristianFurry@USGSVolcanoes Hey. So um, ya probably know of the earthquake that hit in Idaho. I found out it was very close to the Challis Volcanic formation. What are the chances of the earthquake being magmatic, or a precursor to a future eruption?response: USGS Volcanoes Replying to @TChristianFurry Pretty small. It was a normal faulting event, which is related to tectonic extension of the western US. Such quakes are unfortunately pretty common in the region. Like the 1983 Borah Peak earthquake, M6.9, also in central Idaho. Volcanic quakes don't get this big. [ link to twitter.com (secure)] Quoting: KickinIt And they know this how? Pretty sure USGS has never seen a super volcano erupt. Just pointing that out. Quoting: Otherguy2020 I think it's funny that they called it 'pretty common' then compared it to an EQ from almost 40 years ago lol. ~*Ride the Wave*~ |

I may have posted this here a few days ago, but here's a video of the penguins at our local zoo going on an adventure outside their normal dwelling. It cracks me up when they get in/out of the elevator. @stlzoo
Yesterday, our Humboldt penguins took a field trip from their outdoor habitat to inside Penguin & Puffin Coast. They got to visit the Gentoo, king & rockhopper penguins, as well as the horned & tufted puffins. There was a quick stop at the closed gift shop & the offices upstairs. Quoting: WhiteAngel He is still stable, still critical and still on the ventilator. :\ I asked nanny today if she knew papa's login information for his online patient portal. It dawned on me that we could get some info from there on his tests/test results. She didn't know, but looked around his computer and was able to find a little notepad with some of his login info for different accounts, and it had his patient portal info! She gave it to me and I spent 4 of the last 6 hours studying the damn thing. Took multiple screen shots, wrote multiple notes on paper, looked some things up, and texted my 'findings' to my mother and my aunt who is with nanny. I didn't get into detail with them on cytokine storms, but papa is definitely going through one based on a couple of his test results. My understanding is that this is a very bad indicator. ~*Ride the Wave*~ |
