Mini and I are gonna go on an adventure! A local adventure lol, aka a drive. We have no actual destination, but we're bored so we might take a ride to Boston and check things out (from the inside of my car haha). Goodie bag is packed. Rolled a couple, made some sammiches and threw in a couple waters. Also packed the camera, just in case! ~*Ride the Wave*~ |

Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Re: Earthquake Thread ~ Always Updated The bird at the end Quoting: Simple27 OMG, so Nibbles did give birth some time ago as I was thinking. I had mentioned to Isis that I looked up the gestation period for groundhogs and it's only around 30 days. At the time I read that it had already been at least a month, but I had also read how they keep babies burrowed underground for a bit where the temperature is regulated and warm enough (they go just low enough that it stays constant). I bet she gave birth soon after we learned about the pregnancy, and all this time they were waiting until the babies were big enough to bring them out and about. Because Jr. is already a good size! There has to be more than 1 baby, I would think. That guy is going to have a lot of critters living under that shed. There's now an entire family of groundhogs, and I've also seen multiple opossums in the under-shed-cam. ETA: here's an educational link on groundhogs! [ link to www.terrierman.com (secure)] "The groundhog breeding season begins in mid-February, soon after the animals emerge from hibernation. Pregnancy lasts 31-33 days and the single, annual litter of 2 to 9 pups is born toward the end of March or early April.
At birth, baby groundhogs are naked, blind and helpless and measure less than four inches long. A baby groundhog opens its eyes when it is about 4 weeks old, but they seldom venture outside until they are between 6 or 7 weeks old. By midsummer, young groundhogs are about 20 inches long and weigh about four pounds. These "teenage" groundhogs will start to move out from their natal den, and dig their own "starter" burrows, often just a few dozen yards down the fence row.
