I would think it wouldn't take a very large diameter to cause some doom, though. Quoting: KickinIt I found this, still looking. It also shows it passed on March 13th, not the 6th roughly 25 meters 2011 ES4 (also written 2011 ES4) is an Apollo near-Earth asteroid roughly 25 meters (82 feet) in diameter. It was discovered on 2 March 2011 when the asteroid was about 0.054 AU (8,100,000 km; 5,000,000 mi) from Earth and had a solar elongation of 159 degrees. It passed closest approach to Earth on 13 March 2011. won't let me link to Wikipedia for some weird reason. Here it shows 141 feet [ link to www.ibtimes.com (secure)] the space rock has an estimated diameter of about 141 feet. According to the agency, a near-collision will occur between Earth and 2011 ES4 on Sept. 1, 2020 at 10:49 a.m. EDT. During this time, the asteroid will dangerously fly past Earth from a distance of only 0.00052 astronomical units or around 78,000 kilometers away. This means the asteroid will approach Earth at a much closer distance than the Moon, which is located about 363,000 kilometers from the planet. If the asteroid’s trajectory gets slightly affected by the gravitational forces in space as it makes its way towards Earth, it could end up on a collision course with the planet. If this happens, the asteroid will most likely burn up and explode in the atmosphere instead of hitting the ground. Unfortunately, as previous incidents have shown, airbursts caused by asteroids can still be very dangerous. Back in 2013, an asteroid that was about 66 feet wide exploded over Russia’s Chelyabinsk Oblast region. Last Edited by WhiteAngel on 07/20/2020 06:13 PM |

But .... the biggest and scariest asteroid flyby is by worse in 2029, and this is the one the actually scares me. On April 13, 2029, a speck of light will streak across the sky getting brighter and faster. At one point it will travel more than the width of the full Moon within a minute and it will get as bright as the stars in the Little Dipper. But it won’t be a satellite or an airplane—it will be a 340-meter-wide near-Earth asteroid called 99942 Apophis that will cruise harmlessly by Earth, about 19,000 miles (31,000 km) above the surface. That’s within the distance that some of our spacecraft that orbit Earth.
At closest approach, just before 6 p.m. EDT, Apophis will be over the Atlantic Ocean – and it will move so fast that it will cross the Atlantic in just an hour. By 7 p.m. EDT, the asteroid will have crossed over the United States.
