To all you cooks, I need some advice.

Hubby always does the turkey and I do the rest with him helping -this year the kids are doing much more.

This year, he is going to flip the bird over and roast it breast down, so the white meat is more roast. The first thing he planned to do was put 5 whole garlic bulbs on the bottom of the roasting pan to "balance" the turkey. I NIXED that so fast he was stunned. I said that would not only ruin the gravy it would make the turkey inedible!!!!!!!!!

Next he planned to stuff the turkey with two large onions, quartered, 4 lemons halved, and some fresh sprigs of rosemary, thyme and parsley.
Again, I nixed the lemons, though I have read a lot that most people put a whole lemon halved in the cavity.

My questions to you folks, is does the lemon change the flavor of the gravy much??

Usually we just season the cavity with salt, pepper, garlic, onion and a little bit of sage and the gravy is WONDERFUL! The onion is only half of one that is this slightly cut up. The garlic is either a few cloves that were smashed to release their goodness or just some garlic powder.

I'm afraid if we do what he wants, the meat will be too strong and the gravy ruined. Yes, it is all about the gravy!
 Quoting: WhiteAngel

We have always put exactly what you listed in the center, including lemon. I think we usually put 1 large lemon halved. I have never noticed it impacting the gravy whatsoever. Same with garlic - should only add flavor although you could cut back to just a couple cloves if you're worried about it.
 Quoting: KickinIt

Do you taste the lemon in the gravy? Or does it just add a bit of acidic flavoring?
 Quoting: WhiteAngel

I really don't notice it at all. It might add a tad of acidity, but there is no lemon flavor. It might be different if the lemons were juiced. Just don't squeeze them - cut them and throw them in. Or, leave them out if you're really worried about it. I figure if nothing else having it in there helps to create moisture.

That was his thinking; moisture and possibly a bit of acidic if anything. I can't nix everything he wanted to do, Just can't do it. He looked like a little boy, so excited to try this all out. Just toning him down a little as he is a good cook but doesn't understand how STRONG garlic and onion can be. A little goes a long way

Me, I am a traditionalist - don't mess with generational Thanksgiving dishes. You can add something but never change what my great-great-grandmothers did!!!

You want to make them in normal size muffin tins. The word "mini" in the title is a bit misleading. I made mine today, they were super easy. I decided not to bother with the caramel and chopped pecan topping because it seemed unnecessary. Plus I only made 1/2 a batch anyway. However, I sorta wish now I would've done the topping, because they look boring.

Thank you!!! Same with me and that's almost exactly what I was saying last night to Nef and Mini. We have to have all of the traditional fixings, however we can add things we don't normally have at my mom's. Just can't take away from what we've done every single Thanksgiving.

Nef, being from the south, does things differently with his cooking style so this is gonna be interesting. Mini is very concerned about things being exactly like they are at my mom's.

Anywho, good luck with any and all of your changes tomorrow. I'm bracing. Honestly, I only care that Mini has as normal of a Thanksgiving as possible, and that only leaves the dinner to be 'normal' since the family gathering has been destroyed. She's strong AF, but I know none of these changes are easy for any of us. :| Doing my best to keep a happy spirit over here. So not always easy. At all. But me must, if for no other reason, for our kiddos. And of course, our sanity. <3

Good to hear. That likely means Mini is negative too.

I bet you all will have a good time tomorrow and I'm sure the food will turn out well. It will be different and it's not ideal or what you want, but try to embrace it. There will be more "normal" Thanksgivings in our future.

Hi all. Hi WA I think nix the garlic. The lemons probably won't hurt anything. Onions sound ok. I always stuff my turkey with....traditional stuffing.

I use a reynolds bag for the turkey and it turns out tender and delicious.

I made pies and cranberry sauce today. I just love the traditional way my mom did it.

Simple, I'm so glad the test was negative. You probably won't get it. Praying for a beautiful and Happy Thanksgiving for all.

Life is good. I am gratuful.

Maybe graham crackers/graham cracker crust could work as a substitute? I'm not great in the kitchen lol, but I can surely follow a recipe.
