Storm Forecast
Valid: Sun 10 Aug 2014 06:00 to Mon 11 Aug 2014 06:00 UTC
Issued: Sun 10 Aug 2014 04:36
Forecaster: VAN DER VELDE

Levels 1 and 2 were issued for southern UK, parts of France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxemburg, western Germany and southern Scandinavia mainly for severe convective wind gusts and tornadoes, but also large hail.

A level 1 was issued for parts of France, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Switzerland, northern Italy and western Balkan mainly for large hail.

SYNOPSIS

Remnants of ex-tropical cyclone Bertha reach the southwestern UK this morning. It is undergoing cyclogenesis in a baroclinic environment and will assume classic extratropical cyclone features with well defined fronts. The occlusion point is predicted to move from Wales to Yorkshire and then northward, while the surface cold front will push eastward into France, reaching Germany by 21Z (GFS 18Z run), approaching Poland, Sweden and Norway by 03-06Z the next day. The warm front is advected northward from Belgium at the start of the period and should have reached central Denmark by 18Z. The cold front is much better defined at mid levels, running ahead of the surface cold front, enabling a narrow zone with dry/cold mid levels over moist low levels harbouring potential instability. Indeed, the GFS model shows this zone to have a CAPE similar to the warm sector. The magnitude of MLCAPE is not so large, however: 300 to 700 J/kg. This is caused by mid level lapse rates hardly better than neutral in range of the cold front. Deeper into eastern France and Germany steeper lapse rates are found. The cold front is supported by the advection of a PV anomaly which should cause strong lifting over southern UK, NW France, Benelux, NW Germany and southern Scandinavia.
The situation allows for highly organized convective storms thanks to the strong linear forcing and the presence of strong vertical wind shear.

Valid: Sun 10 Aug 2014 13:00 to Sun 10 Aug 2014 17:00 UTC
Issued: Sun 10 Aug 2014 13:27
Forecaster: GROENEMEIJER/PUCIK

At 13 UTC, a surface cold front associated with a cloud band eas located over NW France along a line from Dunkirk to le Mans to La Rochelle. Another line of clouds and a few storms was located further east from near Luxembourg to Limoges.

Ahead of the front, over NW France, very stronglow-level winds are evident per 12 UTC Trappes sounding and radar VAD with 25 m/s wind reported at 1500 m, yielding very strong low-level shear. Clearing skies ahead of the front should yield some further destabilization, which is also aided by lift ahead of the upper-level trough. With high 18-21 C dew point temperatures on the order of 1000-1500 J/kg CAPE should be able to form ahead of the front, and slightly higher values over eastern France.

Widespread storm development along the front and along the eastern line are expected during the coming hours. Given the strong shear, the storms will include supercells with strong low-level mesocyclones. A tornado threat will therefore exist with these storms. These tornadoes may be strong.

Additionally, severe winds will be an important risk and some large hail may occur as well. Until 17 UTC, the storms will move northeastward and affect Belgium the southern Netherlands, Luxembourg, parts of E France and W Germany and W Switzerland.

Faraway Earthquake Triggered Antarctica Icequakes
Antarctica's ice snapped and popped because of a major earthquake in Maule, Chile, halfway around the world, a new study reports.

Antarctica has been touched by great earthquakes before. In March 2011, Japan's Tohoku tsunami tore off two Manhattan-size icebergs from the Sulzberger Ice Shelf, more than 8,000 miles (13,000 kilometers) south. Sailors also reported a massive Antarctica iceberg-calving event after Chile's 1868 great earthquake.

Antarctic Icequakes Triggered By Earthquake in Chile
The Magnitude 8.8 Chile earthquake of 2010 triggered icequakes (cryoseisms or frost-quakes); vibrations from rapid fracture in large ice fields, frozen soil, or rocks interlaced with frozen water. Seismic data sped up 100x produces the sound. Recorded

Codfish numbers at key fishery hits all-time low

The level of codfish spawning in one of the most critical fisheries in the Northeast U.S. is at an all-time low.

National Marine Fisheries Service scientists say the amount of cod spawning in the Gulf of Maine is estimated at 3 to 4 percent of its target level. That number declined from 13 to 18 percent three years ago. Scientists say low levels of reproduction in the fishery are holding repopulation back.

7 weeks!! This includes dead bodies still carry the virus for 7 weeks or longer is what I read. So I would think that even the semen might might be safe - 3 months would need to be for me!!!! Of course, let's hope they are busy recovering, as I am sure that will be a lengthy process!!!!!!!

Ca-ching! Florida workers find 2,000 silver coins during home demolition

'It was like a treasure hunt — the more you dug the more you found,' city official says

Police in Florida have seized 60 pounds of silver coins that had been stashed for decades inside the walls of a recently demolished home.

According to officials in St. Cloud, Fla., glass pickle jars holding more than 2,000 coins shattered while city workers were leveling a 1915 bungalow, turning the demolition into a momentary slot machine.

"It was like a treasure hunt — the more you dug the more you found," one of those workers, Melissa Howes, told the Orlando Sentinel. "We thought we might be able to keep it like finders keepers, but it was city property."
