Well I'm not exactly sure. But I know most walla walla sweet onions are grown in Washington and some grown in Oregon. [Wallawalla] [link to i62.tinypic.com] I know walla walla season is a big deal in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Utah and Northern California. I don't know if any of the other country sees them. I'm in Washington Washington. And they're down to about 88 or 92 cents a pound now. We are halfway through the season. That is pretty expensive for 1 onion though. Considering they're almost always a pound.

Unusual geological event in USA on Tuesday, 19 August, 2014 at 03:12 (03:12 AM) UTC.
Description
More than a year after a 6-year-old boy was almost buried alive in a popular sand dune, more holes are appearing and scientists still aren't sure why. The 126 foot sand dune, called Mount Baldy, in Indiana, remains closed as new potentially dangerous holes are appearing. Three geologists arrived last week with high tech equipment in the hope of using radio waves and core samples to see if they can determine what's causing the holes. Their plan? To eventually build a three dimensional map of the dune to try and see it's internal structure. Most holes have been about 2 inches wide and 3 feet deep, but the latest hole, discovered last week, was 7 inches wide and 4.5 feet deep - making it the deepest to date. The geologists say what they are finding is changing what they thought they knew about the properties of sand dunes. One of the theories is that the holes could be connected to decaying trees or rotting man made structures buried by the dunes throughout the years. Hopefully scientists will have soon have some answers. The $90,000 study funded by the National Park Service calls for an initial report in three months with a final report in a year.

Biological Hazard in USA on Tuesday, 19 August, 2014 at 03:33 (03:33 AM) UTC.
Description
At least 12 Firefighter candidates have been infected with methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, known as MRSA, during their training at the Fire Academy on Randall’s Island, the FDNY acknowledged last week. The drug-resistant staph bacteria originally found almost entirely in hospital and nursing-home settings has in recent years become much more common in the community, in households and particularly in crowded facilities like military barracks or among athletes who play contact sports, where bacteria in an open cut can be passed easily from person to person. Three probies developed MRSA infections during the last training class as well, FDNY spokesman Frank Gribbon said, and an outbreak at several firehouses in 2007 sent seven firefighters out on administrative duty.

Description
A woman who is experiencing symptoms of Ebola is in quarantine at UNM Hospital in Albuquerque. On August 4, the woman returned from a visit to Sierra Leone, a West African country that has been hit particularly hard by the current Ebola outbreak. So far, 810 cases and 348 deaths have been reported there. Last Friday, the 30-year-old woman began to develop flu-like symptoms including fever, sore throat, muscle aches, and a headache. On Saturday, she checked herself into the hospital. The woman is being held in a special room that has negative pressure to keep everything inside the room. The room itself is in protective gear and doctors and nurses have been instructed to wear protective gear when taking care of the woman, reports KOAT. At least 170 healthcare workers have been infected with Ebola so far, but all of them have been in the West African countries that are being affected by the outbreak. Conditions for healthcare workers in those countries present challenges that US medical facilities do not face, such as extreme heat, long hours, under-staffing, and lack of adequate equipment. The New Mexico Department of Health is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to perform tests to (hopefully) rule out the deadly virus. Blood samples will be sent to the CDC in Atlanta. Officials said the woman's preliminary test results should be back by the end of this week. Last week, a NY man who was quarantined after developing symptoms associated with Ebola shared his experience with the public. Fortunately, tests were negative and he was released from the hospital.

Colorado
For the second time this summer, a rabbit in Mesa County has tested positive for tularemia: a dangerous bacterial disease that could be life-threatening. According to the Mesa County Health Department tularemia can affect both humans and animals, while rabbits, hares and rodents are especially susceptible. Humans can become infected with tularemia by coming in contact with infected animals, being bitten by ticks or deer flies, drinking contaminated water, or inhaling contaminated dust. Your pets are also at risk, because dogs and cats can also contract tularemia. Pets with fever, lethargy, swollen lymph nodes or a tender abdomen should be seen by a veterinarian. Symptoms of tularemia can vary based on the mode of infection, but fever is almost always present. Other symptoms include: skin ulcers, swollen lymph glands, eye inflammation, sore throat, mouth ulcers, tonsillitis, cough, chest pain, and difficulty breathing. Tularemia can be life-threatening, however it is often treatable with antibiotics.

A birds-eye view of the bird scorching Ivanpah solar electric power plant

There are roughly 300,000 computer-controlled mirrors at the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System in Primm, Nev. New estimates for the Ivanpah solar plant, an innovative year-old $2.2 billion solar project with Google as a major investor, say thousands of birds are dying yearly, roasted by the concentrated sun rays from the mirrors.

Workers at a state-of-the-art solar plant in the Mojave Desert have a name for birds that fly through the plant’s concentrated sun rays — “streamers,” for the smoke plume that comes from birds that ignite in midair.

Federal wildlife investigators who visited the BrightSource Energy plant last year and watched as birds burned and fell, reporting an average of one “streamer” every two minutes, are urging California officials to halt the operator’s application to build a still-bigger version.

The investigators want the halt until the full extent of the deaths can be assessed. Estimates per year now range from a low of about a thousand by BrightSource to 28,000 by an expert for the Center for Biological Diversity environmental group.

Ebola tests ordered on British-Nigerian woman found dead in her apartment in Austria

AUSTRIA - A 48-year-old British Nigerian woman is feared to have died of the deadly Ebola virus in Austria. The woman’s body was found at her apartment in Vomp, in the Tyrol, at the weekend after she returned from a trip to Nigeria. Blood, hair and urine samples have been sent to a tropical disease centre in Hamburg for urgent tests. The woman, who has a British passport, had travelled from Nigeria to Germany where she then flew back to her home in Vomp. Her body was discovered in her flat on Saturday. Austrian officials confirmed today they implemented emergency measures following the suggestion that she might have died from the Ebola virus. Results from the Centre for Tropical Diseases in the northern Germany city of Hamburg are expected sometime today.

The doctor who attended the scene where the body was found gave the cause of death as a viral infection. Police confirmed that they had already ruled out violent crime for her death. They were alerted to the fact that there might be a problem when a relative had called them to say they could not contact the woman. Head of the regional health board Franz Katzgraber said that he regarded the risk that the woman had died from the Ebola virus as being at the lower end of the scale. However he confirmed it was nevertheless vital to implement emergency measures even when there was just a suspicion. He said only one person has died from the virus in Nigeria and the risk of catching it from a trip to the country was low

Landslides, floods kill nearly 200, displace thousands in Nepal, India:

The death toll from three days of flooding and torrential rain in Nepal and India rose to more than 180 people Monday, as relief teams sent food, tents and medicine to prevent any outbreaks of disease. The downpours also displaced thousands of people in the scenic Himalayan region and revived memories of a deadly deluge last year that killed more than 5,000 people in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The rains in Nepal over the past three days have killed 85 people and left more than 100 others unaccounted for, said national disaster management chief Yadav Prasad Koirala. “We have recovered 85 bodies so far, 54 people have suffered injuries due to landslides and flooding over the last three days and 113 are still missing,” Koirala told AFP. The rains have damaged roads across the country’s western plains bordering India, with poor visibility hindering helicopter rescue efforts to evacuate some 1,500 people stranded in waterlogged homes, said home ministry spokesman Laxmi Prasad Dhakal. “Because of the damage to roads in the area, we can only deliver relief supplies like tents and medicines by helicopter,” Dhakal told AFP. Army officials rescued some 300 people Saturday, while hundreds more awaited help in the worst-hit districts of Surkhet and Bardiya, where electricity lines snapped, leaving thousands without power. “We have had no power all day and we are struggling to reach affected people,” said Bardiya district official Tej Prasad Paudel. In neighboring Banke district, flooding caused by heavy rain washed away homes, district official Jeevan Oli said.
