Ebola: ‘In decades of humanitarian work, I’ve never seen such suffering’ – like something out of a horror movie

Omen? Government says all U.S. healthcare facilities need to be ready for Ebola: here’s the checklist

– While government officials and top doctors have maintained that they don’t think Ebola will become a widespread issue in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending all health care facilities in the country “be prepared for managing patients with infectious diseases such as Ebola virus disease.” Issuing a facility preparedness “checklist,” the CDC recommended that facilities begin reviewing their infection control policies and procedures now. “Facilities should also define the individual work practices that will be required to detect the introduction of a patient with [Ebola virus disease] or other emerging infectious disease, prevent spread and manage the impact on patients, the facility and staff,” the CDC wrote. Here are some of the recommendations straight from the checklist:

Begin education and refresher training for [health care professionals] on [Ebola virus disease] signs and symptoms, diagnosis, how to obtain specimens for testing, appropriate PPE use (including putting on and taking off PPE), triage procedures (including patient placement), HCP sick leave policies, how and to whom EVD cases should be reported, and procedures to take following unprotected exposures (i.e., not wearing recommended PPE) to suspected EVD patients at the facility. •Ensure laboratories review procedures for appropriate specimen collection, transport, and testing of specimens from patients who are suspected to be infected with Ebola virus. •Review policies and procedures for screening and work restrictions for exposed or ill HCP, and ensure that HCP have ready access to medical consultation, including via telephone. •Designate points of contact within the facility responsible for communicating with public health officials and providing internal updates for HCPs and volunteers.

Philippines: ‘restive’ Mayon Volcano put on alert level 3:
September 2014 – MANILA, Philippines

Mayon Volcano in the province of Albay was placed on “Alert Level 3” on Monday evening, September 15, after showing signs of “relatively high unrest,” the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said. In a bulletin issued at 10:00 pm, PHIVOLCS observed 39 rockfall events from 5:00 am to 8:00 pm on September 15, symptoms of the build-up of magma at the summit dome. At least 32 low frequency volcanic earthquakes were also recorded, indicating magma intrusion or volcanic gas activity. PHIVOLCS-DOST raised the alert status of Mayon Volcano from Alert Level 2 to Alert Level 3 which is equivalent to a “Critical Alert” in the agency’s 5-level alert system. This means that the volcano is exhibiting relatively high unrest, magma is at the crater, and that an eruption is possible within weeks.

Phivolcs previously raised Alert Level 2 for Mayon, an active volcano located in the southern part of Luzon Island, on August 15. The agency called for the strict enforcement of the 6-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) around the volcano and the 7-kilometer Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) on the southeasern flank. At 11:00 pm on Monday, Albay Governor Joey Salceda and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office ordered the forced evacuation of all settlers inside the PDZ. The provincial government has also ordered other contingency plans to proceed, including the evacuation of the 10,000 families in the 6-8-kilometer Extended Danger Zone.

Icelandic volcanic system rumbling and growing more unpredictable:

The red-hot fountains of molten lava, glowing like wildfire, are nothing short of spectacular. Yet they could be ominous portents of things to come. For the second time in four nail-biting years, seismologists in the land of fire and ice, Iceland, are bracing for a monumental volcanic eruption that, once again, threatens to disrupt European air traffic. Back in 2010, the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which melted through 200 meters of glacier, sent more than 200 million cubic meters of fine ash billowing almost 10 kilometers into the sky. As a result, several European countries were forced to ground or re-route thousands of flights for several days. This time the threat of an eruption – potentially even more powerful than the one in 2010 – is posed by Bardarbunga, the biggest of Iceland’s 30 or so volcanic systems. Located roughly at the country’s centre, the volcano’s 10-kilometre caldera lies several hundred meters beneath Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier by volume. Scientists are taking the latest rumblings seriously: roughly 8000 years ago, after all, the volcanic leviathan let rip with the largest eruption of the past 10,000 years.

“It is very difficult to predict exactly what will happen with an eruption,” says Monash University vulcanologist Professor Ray Cas, who is president of the International Association for Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth. “Some just fizzle out after relatively minor activity, while others develop into major eruptions,” Cas says.

BP Alaska plans layoffs following Hilcorp sale

Created: 09/15/2014 8:21 PM WNYT.com
By: BECKY BOHRER
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — BP Alaska, a major player in the state's oil industry, on Monday announced plans to lay off 275 employees and direct contractors early next year.
BP's business in Alaska will be smaller because of the previously announced sale of its interests in four North Slope oil fields to Hilcorp, spokeswoman Dawn Patience said.
The layoffs, combined with the 200 people who have accepted jobs with Hilcorp, represent about 17 percent of the total number of BP employees and contractors in Alaska, Patience said. BP has 2,725 employees and direct contractors in the state; of that total, 2,250 are employees.
When the sale was announced in April, employees were told "the entire business is going to look different at the end of this," Patience said.
"The Alaska business is still very important to BP. It's just a smaller business than it was before," she said.
The sale, which Patience said is expected to close later this year, involved all of BP's interests in the Endicott and Northstar oil fields and a 50 percent interest in the Liberty and Milne Point fields. It also included BP's interests in the oil and gas pipelines associated with those fields, BP said in April.
