Mexico A strange phenomenon occurred in the Coatzacoalcos River, at the height of the boardwalk of the community of Villa Allende in the State of Veracruz. Witnesses say that a kind of whirlpool was formed.

OLD VENUS PROBE TO CRASH INTO EARTH: In March 1972, Russia launched a spacecraft to Venus. The Venera probe (since renamed "Kosmos 482") never made it out of Earth orbit. A new analysis by Dr. Marco Langbroek suggests that orbital decay is bringing the old probe back to Earth. "This is a lander built to withstand atmospheric reentry [on Venus]," notes Langbroek, so it "will make for an interesting reentry sometime between 2024 and 2026."

ACTIVE SUNSPOT: A storm is swirling around sunspot AR3014. Yesterday in Romania, astronomer Maximilian Teodorescu made a 45 minute movie of the sun's atmosphere above the huge sunspot. It is literally seething:

"I caught a pretty big M-class solar flare," says Teodorescu. In addition, dark filaments of magnetism can be seen snaking through the region as lesser flares illuminate the interstices. The tumult overlies of the biggest sunspots of Solar Cycle 25 with an unstable 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field that harbors energy for powerful X-flares. Stay tuned.

ONE THIRD OF THE DISTANCE FROM EARTH TO THE MOON: How big is sunspot AR3014? This photo taken by Mohammad Fadel Talafha of the University of Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) puts the behemoth in context:

"Its length (126340 km) is almost 1/3rd of the distance from Earth to the Moon," says Talafha.

These dimensions make it an easy target for backyard telescopes--safely filtered, of course. No solar filter? No problem. Projection techniques work, too.

AR3014 is so big it is technically a "naked eye" sunspot. In other words, you can see it without magnification. If you have a pair of eclipse glasses, put them on and take a look.

Large Sunspot Group Facing Earth

Earth facing sunspot region 3014 produced a moderate M3.0 solar flare on Friday at 07:45 UTC (May 20). Also of interest, AR 3017 was responsible for a brighter M5.6 flare on Thursday. Imagery suggests that neither of these events produced a CME. The large active region will remain a threat for additional solar flares on Friday with an estimated 15% chance for a major X-Flare.
