Quoting: Anonymous Coward 65167071 What are the ones in Kansas and Oklahoma, if you don't mind? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 65149701 IMO, fracking... Quoting: Simple27 Fracking...perhaps. Personally I think that is an easy scapegoat. Does fracking contribute to problems with ground water and perhaps cause minor EQ's? Ground water contamination, very possible, EQ's, maybe... However, the one thing that never gets discussed is the emptying of the aquifer for all the irrigation done in the Midwest. We have been draining that aquifer at an unsustainable rate and have essentially created large voids underneath the surface as they are no longer filled with water. Due to this, there's nothing supporting the ground above so when the ground settles we have EQ's. This would also contribute to numerous sinkholes that have appeared. The ground is literally sinking. It's hard to blame farmers and human misuse that happens on such a large scale. So, we as a society, look for other reasons to blame. Oil companies fill that void and we look to them to blame for these issues since we must have a bad guy or company rather than blame our over consumption of food driving farmers to grow more. Add to the above that we also have crustal rebound taking place from the last ice age (rebound that takes thousands of years) and you have the perfect storm for EQ's. Since the bedrock is relatively close to the surface the EQ's feel much more intense and are felt farther away. This bedrock is also what created the aquifer in the first place and if it is cracked when the ground shakes, which it most likely is, even more water is lost through seepage and the problem is aggravated. In addition, I strongly believe that many of the intense storms the Midwest have gone through have increased in intensity due to the massive amount of irrigation in that area. That water is brought to the surface to water the plants but much of it evaporates. The evaporated water provides more 'fuel' for the storms, thus creating stronger storms, yet again we as a society need something other than ourselves to blame so it is chocked up as 'global warming,' 'Climate change' (both due to CO2 of course) or an anomaly. Funny thing is that CO2 is absolutely needed for plant growth and the amount humans contribute pales in comparison to other natural causes, such as volcanoes, so that is yet again an easy scapegoat and an excellent way to steal more money from people under the guise of helping the planet.
