New Geologic Map Shows the Beauty of the Asteroid VestaFor 15 months between 2011 and 2012, the Dawn spacecraft orbited the asteroid called Vesta, snapping high-resolution pictures of the cratered, potato-shaped rock. Scientists then spent another two and a half years poring over the images and piecing together the geology written on Vesta’s surface. Now, a team led by planetary scientist David Williams of Arizona State University has compiled that information together into this beautiful map, which they’ve published online for the December issue of the journal Icarus. The night before (December 12-13) may offer a decent sprinkling of meteors as well. Geminid meteors tend to be few and far between at early evening, but intensify in number as evening deepens into late night. A last quarter moon will rise around midnight, but Geminid meteors are bright! This shower favors Earth’s Northern Hemisphere, but it’s visible from the Southern Hemisphere, too. If you’re at a temperate latitude in the Southern Hemisphere, try waiting a little later – until close to midnight – to see the beginning of the Geminid shower. Follow the links below to learn more about the Geminid meteor shower in 2014. [ link to earthsky.org] I saw a few of these last year in Florida! Hopefully it will be clearer this year and I'll get to see more!! This year both of my little sisters are coming. The one who didn't come last year is my "fun" sister, so that alone should make this year a much better time! ~*Ride the Wave*~ |

I had my daughter's name tattooed on my back when she was about a year old. I knew the artist well. He's a friend of my daughter's father and his brother. After the tattoo was finished he laughed and said "I just tattooed 'Gregg's Girl' on your back!" Gregg (my daughter's father) and I were no longer together at this point. I found it less than amusing and ran to the bathroom of the shop to make sure he was joking!!! ~*Ride the Wave*~ |

Just a little typo (2015) in the article.. “As of 25 Nov 2015, the eruptive episode that began on 12 Nov 2014 had been officially pronounced over.” According to INVOLCAN, eruption in (Fogo) Cape Verde has a transiting from a lava fountains and strombolian to a more explosive eruption. The lava flow yesterday started to destroy some buildings and everyone who was living inside the caldera was evacuated. But it's more than paid for itself in time, mess, disposal and actual money about twice over. Plus I've always liked Douglas firs. Even several years ago. A Douglas fir was set me back about $125. I couldn't imagine what a Dougless fir would cost now, probably $200. Not to mention they're usually gone first from the season lots. You think a Douglas fir would be the cheapest of like the five or six xmas type out there. because we grow them in the Northwest. I also like Scotch Plains. But they're real expensive too.
