Oklahoma registers more earthquakes in 2014 than in last 30 years combinedAfter years of steadily increasing earthquake numbers in the state, 2014 will be forever remembered as the year Mother Nature grabbed Oklahoma by the panhandle and shook. With 567 temblors magnitude 3.0 or greater, Oklahoma officially became the most seismically active state in the lower 48, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. For context, the 567 quakes last year were more than five times as many as were registered in the state in 2013. In fact, it’s more than the cumulative total number of similarly powerful earthquakes in the state since 1978. According to the Gutenberg-Richter law, which describes a relationship between earthquakes and their magnitudes, for every 100 2.0 magnitude quakes, there will be 10 3.0 magnitude quakes. For every 10 3.0 magnitude quakes, there will be one 4.0 magnitude quake, the strength at which point visible damage can start to occur. There were 19 4.0 quakes in 2014, according to USGS data. Once the toxic mix of water, sand, and chemicals is underground, it can travel for miles, changing the pressure on fault lines and sometimes triggering earthquakes. The practice has caused a surge in earthquakes in many areas where fracking is common. Oklahoma in particular has been hard-hit. Once a state where tremors were few and far between, Oklahoma in 2014 had 564 quakes that were at least of magnitude 3 — the most in the contiguous U.S. From 1975 until 2008, the state had, on average, only three such quakes per year. EnergyWire reports that many in Oklahoma’s oil and gas regions are cautiously tolerant of the earthquakes because of the money that comes with the drilling boom.
