Recently, reports of fracking-related earthquakes are popping up in the news nearly as frequent as job cuts in the oil industry. States like Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Ohio have all reported multiple earthquakes recently. More information in the link [ link to marcellus.com] |

Now the USGS will raise the official earthquake risk level in Texas. The new assessment will appear on the government group's seismic hazard map, which influences building codes, public policy and insurance for homes and other buildings across the country, said Mark Petersen, national coordinator of the earthquake hazards program. It's not the oil extraction that some speculate could be triggering the quakes, but rather the high-pressure injection of hundreds of millions of gallons of wastewater into deep disposal wells, said William Ellsworth, an earthquake researcher with the USGS. That would likely make it the largest felt earthquake ever caused by fracking, a development that experts swore couldn't happen a few years ago. For years industry and fracking experts argued the technology wouldn't cause quakes that could be felt on the surface. The companies are cracking rock in the unconventional Duvernay shale at a depth of 3,000 metres in order to extract condensates, a product typically worth more than oil and used to dilute heavy bitumen for pipeline transport. Rise of 'man-made' quakesOverwhelming scientific evidence from the U.S. Geological Survey now shows that the fracking industry and its need for huge wastewater disposal wells have fostered unprecedented "man-made earthquakes" in the eastern and central U.S. In the process the industry has rewritten seismic records in Ohio, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, Arkansas and Texas. The case, brought by Prague, Oklahoma resident Sandra Ladra, centers around a 5.7 magnitude earthquake, the strongest ever recorded in the state, that struck the region on November 5, 2011 amid a series of similar quakes, destroying 13 homes. The quake caused pieces of rock to fall from Ladra’s fireplace and chimney onto her legs and lap. She was treated for injuries in an emergency room. (I Felt This Quake And I Don't Even Live In Oklahoma. Very Scary...The Ground Rolled and Rippled twice, 15 sec apart). Two years later, a peer-reviewed paper in the scientific journal Geology concluded that the quakes were induced by three injection wells in the vicinity, which perform a step in the fracking process—the disposal of vast volumes of salty, chemical-laced wastewater by injecting it deep into the ground. The rate of recent earthquakes in Oklahoma is a clear deviation from the norm. From 1978 until 2008, Oklahoma averaged only two earthquakes over magnitude 3.0 per year; by midway through 2014, the state had registered 230 quakes of that strength, surpassing California as the most earthquake-prone state in the country. I Found This Article To Be Very Interesting. The link between oil and gas recovery operations and earthquakes is indeed complex, but it is political as well. The task force pointed out "oil and gas is a cornerstone industry in Kansas generating nearly $4.3 billion each year, and employing 118,000 Kansans each day." The industry has utilized hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, in the state for decades without issue. In fact, fracking was developed in Kansas. With this method, drillers use sand, water and chemicals under high pressure to break free oil and gas from rock formations. The waste liquids are then pumped deep underground. But once drillers perfected a horizontal technique, the boom truly began. Horizontal fracking uses a lot more water, but it also extracts a lot more oil and gas from the same site. U.S. production has skyrocketed.Unfortunately, so have the earthquakes. The Kansas Geological Survey reported zero temblors in 2012, and more than 120 in 2014. Before 2008, Oklahoma used to average one earthquake stronger than magnitude 3.0 each year. Last year there were more than 430. Similar patterns are being reported throughout the country. The exponential increase in earthquakes should serve as a warning sign. Today's horizontal fracking demands a different solution. The earth is rejecting current disposal methods. With recent drops in oil prices, the industry is reaping the benefits of improved technology, but it should accept the responsibility of proper disposal that does not harm the community at-large.
