Imagine the flooding if it did! If all this snow melted at once we would have big problems.

I cannot believe we're getting another 2 feet! The news said we're going to go over our winter budget...ya think?!

Boston has already closed school for tomorrow and Tuesday. And it hasn't even started yet. Yesterday's snow did end and we didn't get much of anything. The real snow will start tonight and go through Tuesday. I happen to live right in the jackpot area for accumulation. Of course, ugh!

 Quoting: CuriousSeeker

I know all about the NM volcanoes. There are more extinct and dormant volcanoes in New Mexico than the rest of the USA. NM is the Volcano State. I grew up west of Albuquerque and spent a lot of my youth hiking and exploring the lava fields and lava tubes in that area. There are caves in the lava tubes that are huge and likely have never been seen by archeologists with amazing prehistoric art on the walls and large rocks. Black lava fields were my playground!

-----------------------------------------
New Mexico, the "Volcano State"
(also known as "the Land of Volcanoes")

Each of the Southwestern states can be categorized according to their apparent geologic specialty. Arizona is the big Canyon state, Utah is the Mesozoic fauna state, and Colorado is the big snow-capped Rocky Mountains state. So what then is New Mexico? New Mexicans need only look out their windows for the answer: New Mexico is the Volcano state. New Mexico has one of the greatest concentrations of young, well-exposed, and un-eroded volcanoes on the continent. And as a bonus, it is also the Rift Valley state; it has one of only four or five big continental rifts in the world, East Africa being one of the other ones. The fact is, New Mexico is one of the best places to study the natural history of volcanoes.

--Twenty percent of the U. S. National Parks and Monuments based on volcanic themes are in New Mexico. There are more here than Arizona, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington combined.
--The type example and one of the largest young calderas in the world (Valles Caldera) is in New Mexico. Yellowstone is a caldera, but it is a less visually obvious example of this type of volcanic landform.
--Two of the largest young basaltic lava flows in the world (Carrizozo and McCartys) are in New Mexico. Some of the geological terms for surface features on lava flows were first defined here in New Mexico, not Hawaii.

Winter 2006
Perhaps more than any other state in the U.S., New Mexico offers an enormously diverse record of volcanic activity. Many familiar and distinctive New Mexico landscapes are composed of volcanoes and volcanic rocks. The black, barren, lunar landscapes around Grants and Carrizozo are recent lava flows, and the black flat-topped mesas around Albuquerque are remnants of older lavas. Mount Taylor and Capulin Mountain are volcanoes, and Los Alamos is built on the flank of a huge volcano, one so large that it is best
viewed from space.
