Jerusalem artichokes would likely do well there too. We got some last year at the farmers market.
Quoting: Gomez I have never had one nor eggplant. Sad, right?? Maybe I know why my daughter is a pickie eater |

I would love to learn how to make GOOD miso soup and other Japanese items. She might make some of that to take to market, maybe she could sell it hot, out of one of those big kettle cookers - and if she makes dumplings . . . oh that! Goyza dumplings and dipping sauce!!! mmmm Bottled Ginger dressings and other things - sauces!!! Dipping sauces and marinades made fresh organic!!!

Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Re: Earthquake Thread ~ Always Updated My daughter-in-law is from Japan and has recently moved to the ranch with the kids. We are interested in producing and selling at farmers markets. She is thinking of growing some herbs, some regular veggies, plus some different colored veggies. I was just wondering if you guys went to farmers markets, and what you liked to buy???
Quoting: bigD111 I buy everything we can afford and do not already grow ourselves ! Nothing like fresh veggies, especially when you know the source. I think so far goat cheese was the best surprise. Even just a few things in quantity do well. We have lots of people selling out of the back of pick up trucks on the side of the road. Melons, squash, beans and the most popular... tomatoes. Whatever you go for, good luck ! Quoting: Gomez I agree with Gomez. Specialty items are always a hit. Check your food cottage laws (allows you to make items from your home) for your area for those jams/jellies. We can sell 500 of one item after taking a food safety class in Colorado $20-$40 bucks. 500 items of Chokecherry 4oz jam, 500 items of Chokecherry 4oz jelly, 500 items of Chokecherry 8oz jam. See how that works? I know, looked into it for making cakes, and you all know I love making cakes. Quoting: WhiteAngel We actually have the potential to be a commercial kitchen...all I need is a triple sink. deplorably republican |

For veggies we haven't had or aren't used to eating much, I like to grow them first, so we are used to eating the real thing instead of a veggie that is devoid of flavor and nutrients. I plant to put in an asparagus patch this year. I hate, detest, despise store bought asparagus. One time my aunt and uncle to us on an asparagus hunting field trip. We collected a huge pillow case full of fresh asparagus. I kept telling her I hated it. She told me to hush, I would love these. She steamed till tender and then melted a bunch of REAL butter. There wasn't any asparagus left over. I think the 4 of us - aunt, uncle, mom and myself - gorged and then had an elimination problem for a few days. One shouldn't eat about 20 lbs of asparagus at one sitting......but oh my it was soooooooo worth it. |

We are also going to start a chokecherry syrup and jelly biz. She is the only family member I would entrust this to!
Quoting: bigD111 Can you grow elderberry and gooseberry there? Elderberry is big business for medicinal purposes. Gooseberry is better, imho, than grape jam - has more flavor, and yes, it does taste something like grape jam. Love love love it. Never had chokecherry. Quoting: WhiteAngel Chokecherry grows wild here. We have a ton of them! 16,000 on the ORAC scale. Incredible antioxidant! We are looking at a pemmican that would be 50% chokecherry. Gooseberries are plentiful, and yes, they are great! Black currant is the best, so I hear from the jelly makers and wine people! Just getting started on those! Quoting: bigD111 :Do it: What about making a fruit juice ..c.c Quoting: CaptCarter Actually we have considered a wine, and also a liquor from these.
