One of the problems with manual tank gauging is that, as one might imagine, noxious vapors have a tendency to build up inside the tanks and so, when the hatches on top are opened, those vapors are suddenly released into the previously breathable air around the workers. Breathing these hydrocarbon “plumes” can lead to sudden death by asphyxiation and/or cardiac arrest. In some cases, tank gauging is done alone, increasing the risk of fatal accidents.

HomeEarthEarth SciencesApril 22, 2015More Americans at risk from strong earthquakes, says new report
12 minutes ago

More than 143 million Americans living in the 48 contiguous states are exposed to potentially damaging ground shaking from earthquakes, with as many as 28 million people likely to experience strong shaking during their lifetime, according to research discussed at the annual meeting of Seismological Society of America. The report puts the average long-term value of building losses from earthquakes at $4.5 billion per year, with roughly 80 percent of losses attributed to California, Oregon and Washington...
The report focuses on the 48 contiguous states, where more than 143 million people are exposed to ground motions from earthquakes, but Leith noted that nearly half the U.S. population, or nearly 150 million Americans, are at risk of shaking from earthquakes when Alaska, Puerto Rico and Hawaii are also considered.

In the highest hazard zones, where 28 million Americans will experience strong shaking during their lifetime, key infrastructure could also experience a shaking intensity sufficient to cause moderate to extensive damage. The analysis identified more than 6,000 fire stations, more than 800 hospitals and nearly 20,000 public and private schools that may be exposed to strong ground motion from earthquakes.

Using the 2010 Census data and the 2012 replacement cost values for buildings, and using FEMA's Hazus program, researchers calculated systematically the losses that could happen on any given year, ranging from no losses to a very high value of loss. However, the long-term average loss to the buildings in the contiguous U.S. is $4.5 billion per year, with most financial losses occurring in California, Oregon and Washington states...

Re: Earthquake Thread ~ Always Updated
So on Monday I got pretty sick at work. Rough day physically, as all of them are when I am there. Whatever number of things it could be inside that building trigger my symptoms to kick in. Full force. Luckily yesterday was a "work from home" day. I was in such pain ALL day and night yesterday. Monday was even worse which was why I didn't sleep at all Monday night.

Anyway I woke up this morning and my body was still killing me. I decided to use a sick day (not working from home) and go back to bed. I was so nervous about taking the day off. When the boss is mad at someone he doesn't talk to you and let you know. You get punished in a very different, hidden type of way.

I have been practically begging my boss to move our offices out of that building for the last 8 years. That building should not have office space. It's like an industrial type of building. Lots of different chemicals being used daily. Too many people crammed into these small "office" areas. Too many non-office idiots coming in and out of the building ALL day EVERY day SLAMMING the ever living hell out of the doors while doing so. The doors that our "offices" are RIGHT next to.

Last night I was really thinking about the situation and reflecting on all of the health issues I've been having and how I truly believe ALL of them (except for one) are due to that building. And because of the pain I was in, I had come to about 90% of a decision for my future. To keep my health and lose the job. It's going to get so much worse in there as the Summer moves in. I just don't think my body can handle it anymore.

So I got the BEST phone call possible a little while ago. I'm still kind of in shock. My co-worker, also a long time friend of mine (I got her the job) called me to tell me that WE ARE MOVING!!!! This is SO much bigger than a big deal for me. I know it sounds stupid to everyone else (lol) but this is going to make such a positive change in my life!!! We already have the keys to the offices in the new building. It's a street away from where we currently are so there's no inconvenience as far as the commute goes. We will ALL have our OWN offices. As sad as it sounds, that is a dream come true. My current "office" is about the size of a jail cell with 3 of us sitting within arms reach of one another, plus all of the furniture in the room. It's disgusting. Forget about it if one of us gets sick....yuck!

Sorry for the wall of text lol! I just wanted to share because I have talked about my work situation here many times. : )
