A group of dacitic lava domes was constructed in the center of the caldera. The highest dome, Kami-yama, forms the high point of the volcano, topped by the clouds in the center of the photo. The caldera was created during two large Pleistocene eruptions. The latest eruption at Hakone took place about 3000 years ago, although seismic swarms have occurred frequently during the 20th century. [ link to www.volcano.si.edu] ~*Ride the Wave*~ |
