Bear escaping fire near Port Alberni caught in 'heartbreaking' photo

As hundreds of wildfires rage across B.C., a photo of a bear escaping the flames from a blaze near Port Alberni, B.C., has emerged.

Steve Kendall took the photo Wednesday night while on a boat with a friend in Two Rivers Arm.

Kendall said the bear was heading towards the shoreline, trying to escape the Dog Mountain wildfire on Sproat Lake, and he felt bad for it.

B.C. wildfires: what you need to know
"There's only one narrow roadway out of that area," Kendall told CBC News.

"It's just a matter of time before that entire peninsula is burnt."

Massive El Niño growing in California, say models

SACRAMENTO — There is growing evidence California could see an even stronger El Niño event this winter than the 1997 one that caused massive flooding across Northern California.

Stunning images from Japan's Himawari 8 Weather Satellite, just activated Tuesday, show what could become a historic El Niño in full bloom.

[link to www.usatoday.com]
 Quoting: JazzyG

Looks like the El Nino that formed in the Spring is continuing to grow to historic levels. Though they are talking about Calif mostly because of their drought, a big El Nino, can mean major snow for Colorado. In Oct 97 if my daughter hadn't been born two weeks early, she would have been born during a major snow storm that dumped 3-5 feet of snow on Denver, depending on the part of the metro one lived in. Officially it was only 21.6 inches but anyone who lived here knew this wasn't even close to what the area got. DIA is the official keeper. I have my mom's journals that prove we got almost 4 feet of snow with drifting over 6 feet.

Then in 2006 starting in December the snow started and didn't stop. Dec 20-21 officially there was just over 20 inches of snow, but this is only part of the story. The schools closed a week early for winter break which usually starts a few days before Christmas Eve. Every single weekend for 8 weeks, it snowed. School was delayed starting for a week after Winter break was over, which usually happens about the 3-5 of January. Snow packed roads in front of my house grew deeper and deeper. When it finally stopped snowing, the first part of Feb, there were pot holes made of snow over 18" deep of ice. We called it out glacier. Road crews were way too busy to deal with neighborhood streets so a few of the men would go out and fill the holes with snow to allow vehicles to come and go. When they came to clear the streets after Valentine's day, the first swipe with a large grader only too a layer or so, took all day for them to clear my street and the one behind us that they just made a circle with. A big dump truck would follow in front of the scraper for them to dump the ice into. The dump truck when full would go up to the middle school, dump in a large grass area in front till there was over 10 feet high and about 50 feet long of snow and ice piled high from just my neighborhood. This is the year I remember clearly because it was during the time my mom was dying, she was gone by April.

Then there was March 17-19, 2003 with 31.8 inches. This is the year that the kids built snow forts and snow tunnels (yes we were watching closely) We woke up to not being able to see the tops of pickup trucks. The was the second largest snow dumper in Denver history. The largest was December 1-5, 1913 = 45.7 inches. This was when the airport was still Stapleton and closer to downtown Denver. I only wonder if the three big snow storms mentions would have bumped the 1913 storm to 3rd or 4th place if the official weather station had of been kept at the Stapleton location.

Sounds like the winter Simple just went through.....

That's just crazy. I read online that the girls who were hit by the car had just jumped the little sister of the girl driving the car at a gas station and then were waiting for her outside of her house...which is where they were when they got hit by the car. Do you know if that's the story behind it? I didn't see the thread yesterday. Also read that when they jumped the little sister they had a taser?
