A bit of debris chipped the International Space Station. That’s just one piece of a much bigger problem.

When you sit around imagining life aboard the International Space Station (we all do that, right?) one thing you probably don’t want to think about is space junk slamming into your vessel. And you almost certainly don’t want to imagine a piece of that junk taking a chunk of your spacecraft’s window with it.

Especially not when the chipped window in question is the one that provides some of the best views of Earth.

But that’s exactly what happened last month in the space station’s Cupola, a European-built 2010 addition that you’re sure to recognize — it’s where those great pictures and videos showing stunning shots of our planet are taken.

“I am often asked if the International Space Station is hit by space debris,” British astronaut Tim Peake, who took the freaky photo of the damaged window, said in a statement. “Yes — this is the chip in one of our Cupola windows, glad it is quadruple glazed!”

Um, yeah. You can say that again.

OT:

I wonder why an interesting thread (red pin, 5 stars) about near future technologies and their impact on society gets deleted, while BS like "... ask me a question" can stay.

Fortunately I could save the 1st page.

Because from my POV it was an important discussion there.

New research estimates probability of mega-earthquake in the Aleutians

A team of researchers from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM) published a study this week that estimated the probability of a Magnitude 9+ earthquake in the Aleutian Islands—an event with sufficient power to create a mega-tsunami especially threatening to Hawai'i. In the next 50 years, they report, there is a 9% chance of such an event. An earlier State of Hawai'i report (Table 6.12) has estimated the damage from such an event would be nearly $40 billion, with more than 300,000 people affected

Getting very crazy here in my small part of the world. Family arriving for graduation Monday.
Sorry I haven't been around much, not even lurking. Just so swamped I feeling like a chicken with its head cut off running around all over without a clue what I am doing most of the time.

Hope all are doing well and know I love you all
