Did ya get buried up there? It got down to 14 here last night but is slowly warming up now...38 Quoting: ~Jazzy~ We did lol! I'd say we got at least a foot. It's freezing today though. The Weather Channel says it 'feels like' 6 degrees. We have some more snow coming tonight/tomorrow. Not a lot though. I think. I hope! Quoting: Simple27 Not a lot for tonight/tomorrow, but Sunday and Monday...and then Wednesday through Friday...UGH! Winter Storm Orson May Be Second Blizzard in Five Days to Strike New England, Boston Sunday and MondayMondaySnow, heavy at times, is probable over at least parts of New England, most likely over eastern New England, possibly including the Boston metro. Winds may intensify quickly, particularly near coastal New England, with some gusts capable of downing trees, power lines, and triggering power outages, not to mention potential blizzard conditions, in some spots. This may have high-impact on Monday travel in New England, including flight cancellations and difficult travel on roads. Areas from New York City south will be dry, but windy. If that's not enough, there's yet another system to watch mid-late next week for the Northeast. We may have yet another East Coast low form and intensify in the Wednesday through Friday timeframe next week that could, bring yet another Northeast snowstorm. Thx for alerting! :) Couple of observations in no particular order... 1) Western Turkey pattern is looking more each day like a foreshock sequence culminating in a quake of around 6.5-6.8 magnitude. If it goes further west towards Aegean Sea, it can go near 7.5. Especially the 2-3 magnitude quakes are suggesting that the biggest one is still coming. 2) Pacific-Antarctic 5.2 yesterday south, Nunavut today extreme north. Gives the green light for 7+ activity. I don't think the 6.5 in Mindanao was "it". Will try to look for Philippine patterns. 3) Have a great day everyone, enjoy the magnificent winter weather :> -1 fahrenheit here... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73979217 I think you're spot on about Turkey. We were saying the other day the quakes there seemed excessive to be aftershocks. And today they had a couple bigger ones in the 4 range. |

7) Can total lunar eclipses predict earthquakes? The 1971 San Fernando earthquake (also known as the Sylmar earthquake) occurred in the early morning of Feb. 9 in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in Southern California. The magnitude was determined to be of Richter magnitude 6.7. Fifteen hours later, a total lunar eclipse took place and there were some that suggested that the alignment of the sun, Earth and moon was responsible. Dr. William Kaufmann, who was the director of the Griffith Park Observatory in Los Angeles back then and he noted that, "Today the sun and moon are pulling the Earth in exactly opposite directions. As a result, the Earth is squeezed into the shape of a football instead of a sphere, and we believe that gravitational forces and tidal stresses caused by this alignment are probably what triggered the earthquake." However, there have been many total lunar eclipses in recent history and only a few isolated cases were accompanied by any significant earthquake activity. While the sun-Earth-moon alignment (called a syzygy) might be one ingredient in causing an earthquake, any actual relationship is highly inconclusive. [ link to www.space.com] |

While the sun-Earth-moon alignment (called a syzygy) might be one ingredient in causing an earthquake, any actual relationship is highly inconclusive. [ link to www.space.com] Quoting: Goofy for God Several recent studies, however, have found a correlation between earth tides (caused by the position of the moon relative to the earth) and some types of earthquakes. One study, for example, concludes that during times of higher earth and ocean tides, such as during times of full or new moon, earthquakes are more likely on shallow thrust faults near the edges of continents and in (underwater) subduction zones. Lunar or solar eclipses represent, of course, special cases of full and new moon, but do not cause any special or different tidal effects from full and new moon. Earth tides (Earth's surface going up and down by a couple of centimeters) and especially ocean tides (surface of the ocean going up and down by a meter or more) raise and lower the confining pressure on shallow, dipping faults near continental edges and in subduction zones.
