USGS STUDY SAYS MASSIVE EARTHQUAKE ALONG SAN ANDREAS FAULT IS WAY OVERDUE IN GRAPEVINE

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A recently published study reveals new evidence that a major earthquake is way overdue on a 100 mile stretch of the San Andreas Fault from the Antelope Valley to the Tejon Pass and beyond.

Researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey released the results of the years-long study warning a major earthquake could strike soon.

The thing is, 'soon' is a relatively broad term in geological timelines. Forecasting an earthquake isn't like forecasting a dam break. Man built and controls the dams.

G-d controls the earth. hugs

I've read some papers, not peer reviewed, about Mexico's geologic instability and its effects not necessarily on its antipode nor adjoining territories but in unlikely and seemingly unrelated regions. There are some researchers trying to draw evidentiary correlations but so far have been unsuccessful. The data only goes back five years at best, but I find it intriguing.

"The stress is building up along the San Andreas and a large earthquake is inevitable," Graves said.

Most earthquakes were 7.5 magnitude or larger, according to the study. Graves said the damage from an earthquake that powerful could be significant across the region.

Yeah, its pretty bad when you have to dust your bug-out bag and start adding medications related to old age ailments, which is particularly egregious when you first put your bug-out bag together when you were 25 yrs old.

SPOTLESS SUN SPARKS BRIGHT AURORAS: The sun has been completely blank for 48 hours--no sunspots at all. Who needs them? Throughout that interval, geomagnetic disturbances and bright auroras have pulsed around the Arctic Circle. Last night in Abisko, Sweden, tour guide

Sarah Skinner barely had time to set up her cameras before the sky erupted: [link to spaceweathergallery.com]

Sunspots are a well-known metric of space weather. When sunspot counts are high, magnetic disturbances and polar auroras are common. Turns out the same is true when sunspot counts are low. Last night's display was caused by solar wind flowing from a hole in the sun's atmosphere--no sunspots required.

The sunspot cycle is crashing toward a new solar minimum expected in 2019-2020. Last night's display confirms that space weather does not stop when sunspots vanish. Indeed, in many ways, it just gets more interesting.

THE TRANSFORMATION OF VENUS: On March 25th, Venus will pass almost directly between Earth and the sun--an event astronomers call "inferior solar conjunction." As Venus approaches the sun, the planet is turning its night side toward Earth, reducing its luminous glow to a thin sliver.

Astrophotographer Raffaello Lena of Rome, Italy, has been monitoring the transformation: [link to spaceweathergallery.com]

You don't need such a large telescope, however, to see the shape of Venus. Even ordinary binoculars will show the crescent. Amateur astronomers are encouraged to monitor Venus in the lead-up to inferior conjunction. In the nights ahead, the crescent of Venus will become increasingly thin and circular. The horns of the crescent might actually touch when the Venus-sun angle is least on March 25th.

This doesn't surprise me, because it definitely feels like there have been a lot of tornadoes thus far. I mentioned yesterday there had been an EF1 in Missouri during the storms the night before, but now they are saying there were actually THREE tornadoes that night (all EF1, I believe). And I know there were other states that storm produced tornadoes this week too. Plus we had that breakout in the storms the week prior. And I remember an oddball tornado in Massachusetts as well. I hope this doesn't mean there is worse weather to come when actual spring arrives.
