Ummm....I don't like the looks of this at all. Look at that radar model for later this evening on the right! That looks very bad. They were talking about straight line winds with this storm. They weren't kidding.

[link to www.facebook.com (secure)]

Edit to add:

"However, after 3 p.m., storms will blossom rapidly over western Missouri and quickly grow into an expansive complex of fast moving, violent wind producing storms, what we call a “DERECHO.” Winds within this complex could exceed 70 mph and will be capable of extensive wind damage similar to that of a tornado. In addition, some very large hail–golf ball to baseball-sized–will be possible in the strongest cells. And finally, there will also be a risk of a couple of short-lived tornadoes near the leading edge of the fast moving storm complex.

Current thinking is that storms will sweep across the viewing area sometime between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. Saturday. They will last about 30 to 60 minutes in any one location, with most severe portion of the storms lasting for 10-15 minutes."

Stay safe my friend! The last Derecho that blew across my area of Indiana broke in half an iron pole that held up a carriage light in our front yard. The carriage light which of course had all its glass blown out was hanging by the electrical lines and swinging in the wind. Stay sheltered because if its bad it seems now you will also have flying baby snakes in the air. Gonna say a protection prayer for you and hope all will be well.

That is spectacular! And I would like a CD of that entire mix! I love how the people in the background can't hold still. I understand, I was doing the same in my desk chair.

Some friends were over last night, and later on when it had dwindled to just two of us, all the sudden a baby snake slithered right by us between our feet as we were sitting on my patio! We had very dim lighting out there, so at first I thought it was a really large earthworm. But my friend (a guy who is actually fairly outdoorsy) lifted his feet in his chair and said, "OMG baby snake!" We about shit ourselves.

What's ironic is, earlier in the evening my friend said he had just seen a snake in his yard (he lives 1 mile from me). I commented that I had just read an article in the local paper this week that said snakes are popping up in unusual places in the STL area due to all the flooding we've had this past month. I live in the city! It's no concrete jungle, there is plenty of green, but hell, I wasn't expecting city snakes!!

Now I'm on high alert out there on the patio for a bit. That baby snake has a momma and siblings out there somewhere.

That is one brazen snake to slither onto your patio with people right there doing their thing. Most snakes hide from people unless their hungry or just plain mean. If you have an overhang over your patio be careful of sitting under it. In South Carolina we used to get visitors of the snake variety because we lived on a barrier island and snakes were common. Anyway, be careful and again stay safe!

We had a particularly bad derecho here in 2006. Locally everyone calls it "storm of the century". It looked like a war zone just about everywhere. People were without power for over a week. I hope to hell this storm isn't like that one. Also hope there's no flying snakes (snakenado).

This may sound shallow, but I'm worried about my car! I don't have a garage and I'm thinking of skipping my friends' gathering down the street tonight, and driving nearby to the community college where I can park my car in a garage and wait it out. Is that ridiculous? It's a fairly new structure, so it actually might be a safe place to be. Lowest level, of course.

We do not learn from history because our studies are brief and prejudiced. In a surprising manner, 250 years emerges as the average length of national greatness. This average has not varied for 3,000years. The stages of the rise and fall of great nations seem to be:
The Age of Pioneers , The Age of Conquests ,The Age of Commerce ,The Age of Affluence ,The Age of Intellect ,The Age of Decadence.
Decadence is marked by: Defensiveness, Pessimism, Materialism,Frivolity An influx of foreigners The Welfare State A weakening of religion. Decadence is due to: Too long a period of wealth and power, Selfishness Love of money ,The loss of a sense of duty.
The life histories of great states are amazingly similar, and are due to internal factors. Their falls are diverse, because they are largely the result of external causes. - Sir John Glubb The Fate of Empires

It was a baby, probably young enough he doesn't know any better yet than to slither into my personal space! I'd guess he was maybe 8" if you stretched him out straight. Not very thick, that's why I thought it was a super long earthworm at first.

Re: Earthquake Thread ~ Always Updated*5.7 Southeast of Loyalty Islands*5.2 Central Mid-Atlantic Ridge*5.2 Fiji ~ Pg 20429

That baby snake has a momma and siblings out there somewhere.

daaamn

That is one brazen snake to slither onto your patio with people right there doing their thing. Most snakes hide from people unless their hungry or just plain mean. If you have an overhang over your patio be careful of sitting under it. In South Carolina we used to get visitors of the snake variety because we lived on a barrier island and snakes were common. Anyway, be careful and again stay safe!
