This was a pretty cool read about it. [ link to www.npr.org] "HENRY FOUNTAIN: Sure. Well, it was a heck of an earthquake. It was the second-most powerful ever recorded, you know, in recorded history - or since they've been recording earthquakes with instruments. It was originally thought to be about the same power as the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. But in retrospect - or shortly thereafter, it was determined it was much, much more powerful. You know, a rough indication is how long the ground shakes for. And in the San Francisco earthquake, there was a foreshock at first that shook for about 20 seconds. And then the main shocks shook for something like 40 or 45 seconds. So that's about a minute. In Alaska, the ground shook for about 4.5 minutes, which is a really, really long time. As compared to the Japanese earthquake, the Tohoku earthquake of 2011, the one that killed, I think, about 17,000 people and - you know, it led to the Fukushima nuclear disaster - that one was slightly less powerful." Quoting: Master of Nothing Magnitude 9.2: The 1964 Great Alaska Earthquake [ link to youtu.be (secure)] and 1964 Alaska Earthquake Footage [ link to youtu.be (secure)] My Dad got a sabbatical as a teacher and our family drove to Alaska in the summer of 1965 and stayed in Fairbanks. I remember a lot of the damage in Valdez where a huge tsunami had hit the port. The dock and large oil tanks were tumbled over and the railroad rails twisted like spaghetti even a year later. Quoting: joinca That's wild. Apparently in some areas the tsunami was 20 stories high! Quoting: Master of Nothing New study, just published on July 24th... ALASKA AT RISK OF A MASSIVE EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI SIMILAR TO DEVASTATING 2011 JAPAN EVENTPreviously, scientists thought this area was fairly benign, steadily releasing tension as the plates moved slowly past one another. But this is not the case. Instead, the researchers found a geological structure similar to that seen at the site of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, suggesting this site could also slip suddenly and produce a huge tsunami. The Tohoku earthquake took place at a creeping segment of the seafloor. It was thought that the frequent, small earthquakes at the site meant it could never build up enough tension to produce one large quake. What scientists failed to realize was that part of the edge of the continental plate had become detached—and that this posed a major risk. A smaller earthquake dislodged the detached section, creating the huge earthquake and tsunami that followed. While scientists knew this fault existed, they did not understand the devastation it could cause. In their study, researchers found a region of the Shumagin Gap that is detached in the same way. The fault they identified stretches about 90 miles roughly parallel to the land and extends over 20 miles down. The maps suggest the seafloor has dropped to one side and risen on the other. Researchers also found a cluster of seismic activity near where the new fault meets the plate boundary, indicating it is active. New study, just published on July 24th... [ link to www.newsweek.com] Link to study [ link to www.nature.com (secure)] Quoting: Simple27 OH wow, very interesting. We've seen some bad tsunamis in our lifetimes alone, but if a 7 or an 8+ magnitude hit in the wrong spot, we'd witness a tsunami like never before. [ link to www.theatlantic.com (secure)] "For about the last 30 million years, a small tectonic plate named Juan de Fuca has been sliding under the far vaster North American plate into the Earth’s mantle. Today, this mostly happens without anyone’s notice—even though it causes minor, near-undetectable earthquakes about every 300 days—but sometimes the pressure pent up is released suddenly and catastrophically. This is what happened on January 26, 1700. The plate slipped, and a magnitude-9.0 earthquake resulted, devastating the coast of modern-day Oregon and Washington. According to one story, an entire First Nation on Vancouver Island, the Pachena Bay people, died in flooding overnight. And the quake triggered a tsunami that rode across the Pacific Ocean for 10 hours before slamming the east coast of Japan, where merchants and samurai recorded flooding and damage. [ link to www.theatlantic.com (secure)] "Ramalho and his colleagues identified giant boulders almost half a mile inland, hundreds of feet above sea level, that they believe were transported by a mega-tsunami. Based on what they found, the scientists believe the tsunami swelled to a height of about 560 feet, tall as the Washington Monument, before inundating the island. “These characteristics make this event one of the largest mega-tsunamis preserved in the geological record,” Ramalho and his colleagues wrote in a paper about their findings." Those are some "the day after tomorrow", "2012" type waves lol |
