Volcano Activity in Costa Rica on Thursday, 08 May, 2014 at 05:38 (05:38 AM) UTC.
Description
An inspection by volcanologists from the University of Costa Rica's National Seismological Network (RSN) last weekend found that the water level in Poás Volcano's lagoon has decreased by 110 centimeters in the last month. A group of RSN experts descended into the crater's lagoon, known as Laguna Caliente, to check out reports by park rangers of increased volcanic activity at the site. Volcanologist Carlos Ramírez said the decrease in water levels has been a recurring trend in recent years mostly due to a decrease in rainfall during the country's rainy season (May-November). Average temperatures of the lagoon's water increased by 10 degrees Celsius compared to a previous measurement in early April, when experts recorded 39 C (102 Fahrenheit). Last month, the lagoon lost 58,000 cubic meters of water, the RSN said. Water acts as a natural filter for gases from the volcano. An increase in the emission of gases (read: acid rain) could occur if the lagoon's water level continues to drop, Ramírez said. These gases would reach land surrounding the crater, and could affect agricultural areas in nearby Alajuela communities including Grecia and La Troja. Tourist access to Volcán Poás National Park currently remains normal, but administrators are on alert to report any change in the volcano's behavior, the expert said. Poás' period of increasing activity was first recorded in March 2006, with several large eruptions of water, gas and mud, known as phreatic explosions. No magma or lava is dispelled during these events. Several small explosions over the weekend left sulfur deposits on the lagoon's surface, and those deposits are still visible from a tourist observation deck. So far this year, RSN experts have recorded three significant phreatic explosions at Poás. The first, on Feb. 25, reached nearly 300 meters high. On March 30, material reached 200 meters high, and on April 30, it reached 30 meters.

Re: Earthquake Thread ~ Always Updated
The newest reactor at TVA's oldest nuclear plant automatically shut down Tuesday after power supply was temporarily interrupted to two recirculation pumps that supply water to the reactor core, TVA officials said today. The trip of the two pumps at the Unit 3 reactor at the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant caused the unit to cease power generation around 9:30 a.m. EDT on Tuesday. TVA spokesman Jim Hopson said today that feedwater pumps maintained water in the reactor core, but the unit automatically shut down as designed when water levels covering the fuel rods dropped by about 40 inches. "We still had 13 feet over the reactor rods and the water was quickly restored to the previous level (of about 17 feet above the fuel rods)," Hopson said. "We continue to investigate the causes of this incident, but the reactor shut down automatically and there was no safety risk from this event." TVA is keeping the reactor on standby until the investigation is completed, Hopson said. Dave Lochbaum, senior scientist for the Union of Concerned Scientist and a former Browns Ferry and NRC employee, said previous TVA studies of the pumps that circulate water through the reactor core have indicated that an incident like what happened Tuesday should not have occurred. "Apparently, Browns Ferry operated outside the bounds of its safety study," Lochbaum said. "Will TVA fix this dilemma before restarting Unit 3? And will TVA do anything to check whether Units 1 and 2 are equally impaired?" Hopson said the problems on Unit 3 were corrected and are not believed to be similar to those of the other two Browns Ferry units. "But we will continue to look at all of our equipment and procedures at all three units," Hopson said. Lochbaum said the reactor scram was not of any safety concern but did interrupt some of the power generation at Browns Ferry and needs to be assessed to ensure such power interruptions don't continue to happen.

It's not even summer but already there is a case of a potentially deadly disease carried by ticks in Missouri. A vet recently diagnosed Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in a dog in St. Joseph. Britton Cooper loves the outdoors and he spent Wednesday fishing at Shawnee Mission Park. Because he's outside so much, he's gotten bitten by ticks hundreds of time. "I've had some places get pretty infected," he said. Learning about Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever creates another reason to fear them. "That's pretty surprising. I knew about Lyme Disease, but I never heard about that," Cooper said. Fortunately Kansas' recent data from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows no reported cases. But Missouri is one of five states that makes up more than 60 percent of cases in the U.S. Some of the symptoms of RMSF are a fever, headache and even a rash that develops later on. If it's not treated immediately, it could be deadly. Experts recommend that people and their pets stay away from tall grass where ticks often reside. "I've been around wildlife, woods all my life so ticks can be very dangerous," David Montgomery said. He said he walks several times a week and he won't stop doing that to avoid ticks. Instead he will take precautions. "Wear a hat to keep them out of your hair. Try to inspect yourself when you get done with your walk or your run," Montgomery said. The risk of getting RMSF won't keep Cooper from doing what he loves the most either. "I'm not going to stop going outside," he said. Experts say people get infected the most with the tickborne disease in June and July.

Sure is an uptick in these events...
Unit 1 at the Salem nuclear power plant automatically shut down early Wednesday morning. An issue with the plant's turbine generator is the suspected cause. According to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the automatic shutdown went smoothly and a Resident Inspector reports that the plant is in safe condition with control room operators taking appropriate actions. The company is investigating the issue, but NRC public affairs officer Neil Sheehan says that he is unsure of when the unit will resume regular operation. "Generically speaking when they see this sort of event where it's an electrical type fault or some sort of breaker switch that they may be able to reset, it's possible that they could be able to get it back online somewhat quickly, but it all really depends on what they find once they do their troubleshooting," said Sheehan. This is the third unplanned shutdown at the plant operated by PSE&G Nuclear in less than a month. Under NRC rules, increased oversight for the facility is required if more than three unplanned shutdowns occur over 7,000 hours of operation (approximately 9 months). Sheehan says that they evaluate facility data every quarter to see if the facilities exceed 3 unplanned shutdowns and require increased oversight. "We would go in and do a team inspection to look at whether or not the company fully understands the root causes of these unplanned shutdowns, whether or not the company has put in place effective corrective actions and we'll engage with the company to make sure they really feel as though they have their hands around this," said Sheehan. Unit 1 was turned off April 8 so workers could fix a problem with the wiring of its steam generator. PSE&G reported the same unit at the two-unit Salem facility shut off automatically April 13 due to a circuitry issue with the main generator. PSE&G previously indicted those first two shutdowns were unrelated. Unit 2 at the plant is under a scheduled shutdown for a refueling and maintenance. PSE&G also operates a third reactor nearby at its neighboring Hope Creek Station. That unit remains at full power.
