60 years ago #OnThisDay, the largest earthquake ever recorded strikes near Valdivia, #Chile. At magnitude 9.5, it was almost 40 times larger than the Great 1906 San Francisco quake. 2,000 were killed and tsunamis inundated Chile, and parts of Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines.

This quake ruptured a section of the subduction zone 800 KM LONG. That's approximately the distance between San Diego and San Francisco [ link to twitter.com (secure)]
